Kingdom of Furyondy
Once a proud province of the Great Kingdom of Aerdy, the Kingdom of Furyondy was among the first to declare independence during the Age of Fracture. Emerging as a beacon of chivalric virtue, lawful governance, and religious devotion, it stood as a stalwart opponent of evil across the Flanaess. Today, Furyondy bears the scars of decades of war, particularly from its ongoing struggle against the demonic despot Iuz, whose tyranny encroaches from the north.
Despite its hardships, Furyondy endures. It is a realm of stronghold-dotted plains, river-crossed farmlands, and deep ancestral forests, home to a resilient people who cling fiercely to hope, faith, and one another.
The Kingdom of Furyondy stands at a precipice—worn and weary, but unbroken. It is a realm of heroic ideals tested by brutal reality, a bulwark of light in a growing tide of darkness. Whether it will triumph against the fell power of Iuz or be extinguished as so many realms before it remains an open question.
Structure
Furyondy is a hereditary monarchy tempered by a strong noble peerage and a Parliament of Lords, many of whom command their own lands and armies. Its current ruler is King Belvor IV, a veteran of the Greyhawk Wars, a devout paladin, and a figure of national unity.
- The crown holds authority, but power is decentralized; dukes and barons maintain their own forces and fortifications.
- Many of the nobles are devout followers of Heironeous or Rao, gods of valor and peace, respectively.
- Knighthood is both a spiritual and martial calling. The Orders of the Hart and the Shield are among the most respected.
Culture
The people of Furyondy are largely of Oeridian descent, inheritors of a disciplined and expansionist legacy. They value:
- Honor, martial discipline, and spiritual piety
- Hard work and community resilience, especially after recent wars
- Religious traditions, particularly those aligned with Heironeous, Rao, and Trithereon
Despite the hardships of war, literacy and learning are respected, particularly among clergy and the nobility. Temples and castles often house libraries, training grounds, and academies.
Military
Furyondy's army is one of the most organized and experienced in the Flanaess, but its forces are spread thin:
- The Northern Marches, bordering Iuz, are in a near-constant state of siege.
- Knights of the Shield Lands often coordinate with Furyondian forces in campaigns and retreats.
- Skirmishes with the Rovers of the Barrens, Bandit Kingdoms, and even remnants of Iuz's humanoid warbands are common.
- Fortresses, watchtowers, and signal fires form an extensive defense network along the northern frontier.
Though its armies are seasoned, manpower shortages and wartime exhaustion remain critical challenges.
Foreign Relations
Relations with Other Realms
- Veluna: Its closest ally and religious partner. The two nations nearly function as one in times of war.
- Nyrond and Ratik: Fellow resistors of tyranny. They share intelligence and often coordinate on political strategy.
- Shield Lands: Furyondy supports the remnants of this fallen realm, housing refugees and lending knights to their cause.
- Iuz: Furyondy is perhaps the most committed of all nations to stopping Iuz’s expansion and breaking his infernal grasp over the north.
- Rovers of the Barrens: Longtime antagonists, though Furyondy recognizes their skill and considers a truce if they ever unite against Iuz.
Furyondy lies in the central-western Flanaess, stretching from the Velverdyva River in the east to the Veng River in the west. It shares borders with:
- Iuz to the north (hostile)
- The Shield Lands (allied but embattled)
- Veluna to the south (close ally)
- Nyrond and Ratik (ideological allies)
- The Vesve Forest, whose rangers and fey folk often support Furyondy's war efforts
The kingdom's strategic position places it on the front lines against darkness, yet also at the heart of resistance to it.
