096: Blue Alley Conclusion

  Date: Nov 28th, 2025

Summary

The party awoke in the Blue Alley, a deadly obstacle course designed by the wizard Keilier, having been voluntold into helping Garrett's Thieves Guild navigate its treacherous chambers. After recovering from their previous ordeals, Barlo and Shadow, accompanied by their guide Needle, decided to take a short rest in a room containing a bronze statue of Keilier himself. The room was covered in sticky and slippy residue left behind by small creatures called boggles, who served as the dungeon's cleanup crew. During their rest, they identified two magical items they had found: a Lantern of Revealing and a Wand of Secrets that could point to hidden doors and traps within thirty feet.   As they rested, Barlo reflected on his recent experiences and discussed with the others his growing desire to focus his rage in a more centered way, hinting at a potential path toward becoming a monk. He spoke of dreams involving a six-headed dragonborn and the new symbiote hitchhiker he had acquired, which seemed to be guiding him toward this transformation. The party reviewed their inventory, noting they had bronze coins, bottles of alcohol that could serve as firebombs, and a collection of corrupted berries. With their rest complete and their items identified, they prepared to continue their exploration of the Blue Alley's many chambers.   The party proceeded to explore the remaining rooms, first discovering a chamber filled with what appeared to be thousands of copper, silver, and gold coins piled high. Shadow's keen perception revealed that the coins were stacked in an orderly pattern that, from above, would spell out the words "all fake." Barlo tested a few coins and confirmed they were worthless forgeries, so the party moved on without taking any of the false treasure. They continued down the hallway, listening carefully at doors and checking for traps before proceeding.   Opening another door, they found a chamber with walls lined with red ash and a central pit glowing with fiery red heat. Peering down into the pit, Barlo observed medium-sized fire elementals called Ignans moving about in the flames, seemingly using the pit as an incinerator for the dungeon's refuse. Despite the intense heat, Barlo noticed what appeared to be a leather belt that refused to burn among the flames. Intrigued by the possibility of magical items surviving the fire, he tied a rope around his waist and climbed down into the pit, enduring the searing heat. Using his magical hand, he sifted through the ashes and discovered a moonstone gem along with slag from various melted metals. The heat proved overwhelming, causing him exhaustion, so he quickly climbed back up with his prize. Needle appraised the moonstone, estimating its value at around twenty to thirty gold pieces.   The next room they entered reeked of fire and acid, filled with buckets of unidentifiable arcane goo that suggested it had once been an alchemist's workspace. Shadow cautiously tasted some of the goo and identified it as a mixture of two healing potions, though the combined effect remained uncertain and potentially dangerous. Among the experimental remnants, they found a detached stone hand that appeared to be from a female statue. Barlo used the Wand of Secrets to scan the room, confirming there were no hidden doors or traps, so they moved on after collecting the stone hand.   Continuing their exploration, they opened a door to find a chamber filled with thick smoke produced by large pots on the floor. The smoke rose up to create a heavy blanket of obscurement, and through it they could barely make out several floating discs suspended by chains, with the floor twenty feet below. Barlo threw copper coins down to estimate the depth, then tied a rope around his waist and climbed down into the smoke. As he descended, smoke mephits suddenly emerged from the haze and attacked him with blasts of smoldering ash. Barlo flew into a rage, attacking the small winged creatures with reckless abandon and landing devastating blows, including several critical strikes that obliterated the mephits in rapid succession. Shadow attempted to assist from above, but the heavy smoke made it difficult to see. The mephits exploded upon defeat, further obscuring the area, but Barlo continued fighting in the darkness, using his senses to locate and destroy the remaining creatures. After the battle, Barlo attempted to jump across the floating discs to reach a sword he had spotted, but the discs proved unstable and he fell multiple times before finally giving up and climbing back out.   The party then discovered a peculiar room where every surface—the floor, walls, and ceiling—was made of a single solid mirror, creating endless reflections. A three-foot-tall statue of a rearing unicorn stood in the center, and a magic mouth appeared on the northern wall, warning that "everything you see is mine." After some discussion about how to safely interact with the statue, Barlo decided to close his eyes and have Needle guide him to the statue. He successfully grabbed it while keeping his eyes closed, but to his dismay, all his clothes and possessions were instantly teleported to the center of the room, leaving him completely naked. The party realized that closing one's eyes was a valid solution to bypass the enchantment, though it still claimed anything the reflections could see.   Continuing their exploration, they navigated a dangerous corridor where lightning arced between rods fifteen feet above the floor. Barlo attempted to crawl through on his belly to avoid the lightning, but triggered a pressure plate halfway down that caused him to begin levitating slowly upward. He quickly scrambled across the corridor before rising too high, reaching a silver-plated iron door at the end. Using a silver key they had found earlier, they opened the door, releasing dozens of solid steel balls that tumbled out. Shadow used her magical hand to retrieve three gold coins found near the entrance, and they discovered the room beyond was filled with rubbish, dried blood, and hidden bear traps.   Barlo used the Wand of Secrets to scan for hidden doors, which revealed a secret door but also triggered an ambush by skeletons and a large minotaur skeleton. Shadow quickly cast a spell that created a hazardous area of sharp spikes on the ground, and as the skeletons moved through it, they took significant damage. She used another spell to pull skeletons into the spiked area, while Barlo engaged them with his javelin and melee attacks. The party worked together to defeat all the skeletal threats, with Shadow's tactical spellcasting proving highly effective in the confined space.   In the next chamber, they found dark, splintered humanoid skulls with semi-precious gemstones embedded in their eye sockets. When Shadow pulled a gemstone from one of the skulls, a shadowy creature emerged and attacked, but Barlo quickly dispatched it. They also discovered a book that resembled a powerful magical tome, but upon closer inspection it appeared to be a cheap forgery. When touched, the book exploded with a burst of flame, though the party managed to avoid serious harm. They collected the remaining gemstones from the skulls and continued onward.   The party then navigated a long corridor filled with dozens of blades swinging back and forth in a deadly pattern. Barlo used his agility to carefully bypass the blades, reaching a dome-shaped room at the end where a single copper piece sat on a pedestal atop a fluted column. In a moment reminiscent of a famous treasure hunter, Barlo performed a swap, replacing the copper piece with a copy and successfully acquiring the original coin, which was minted in the year 1364 in Golden Ann. With most of the dungeon explored, they returned to the mysterious gate room they had discovered earlier.   The gate room featured imposing iron bars, and they recalled the cryptic message from a magic mouth that spoke of entering "as you entered life" and grasping both the jewel and the iron to be whisked away to the truest of rewards. After much discussion about what this meant, Barlo decided to interpret the instructions literally. He stripped completely naked, placed all his belongings into a portable hole, and handed it to Shadow. With nothing but the gemstone in his hand, he grasped both the jewel and the iron gate simultaneously.   In an instant, Barlo vanished from the Blue Alley and found himself standing naked in the Yawning Portal, a famous tavern and adventuring hub located halfway across the world. Durnan, the stoic bartender, offered him a beer on the house, wisely choosing not to ask questions. Realizing the gate had served as a fast travel system, Barlo decided to make the most of his unexpected arrival. Using the alias Jareth, he established a scholarship fund with Durnan, contributing fifty gold pieces to cover the entry fee for fifty aspiring adventurers who wished to explore the dungeon beneath the Yawning Portal but lacked the funds. He stated his intention to return in several months to check on the fund and hear the stories of those who benefited from his generosity.   After enjoying his drink and setting up the scholarship fund, Needle used a transportation circle to bring Barlo back to rejoin Shadow and the rest of the party. They had successfully navigated the Blue Alley and acquired the unicorn statue that Pradam Estorich needed, along with various other treasures and magical items. The party prepared to deliver the statue and continue their journey, knowing that their adventures were far from over and that the items they had collected might play important roles in the challenges yet to come.

Short Summary

The party navigated the Blue Alley, a deadly obstacle course designed by the wizard Keilier, searching for a unicorn statue needed by Pradam Estorich. After resting and identifying magical items including a Lantern of Revealing and a Wand of Secrets, they explored numerous chambers filled with traps and challenges. Barlo reflected on his growing desire to focus his rage and potentially become a monk, influenced by dreams of a six-headed dragonborn and a symbiote hitchhiker. They discovered rooms containing fake treasure, fire elementals in an incinerator pit where Barlo retrieved a moonstone gem, an alchemist's workspace with experimental potions, and a smoke-filled chamber where Barlo battled smoke mephits in a fierce combat. In a mirrored room, Barlo successfully claimed a unicorn statue by closing his eyes, though the enchantment teleported all his possessions to the room's center, leaving him naked. The party continued through a lightning-trapped corridor and defeated an ambush of skeletons and a minotaur skeleton, with Shadow's tactical spellcasting proving highly effective.   After collecting gemstones from trapped skulls and navigating a corridor of swinging blades, the party returned to a mysterious gate room with cryptic instructions about entering "as you entered life." Barlo interpreted this literally, stripping naked and grasping both a jewel and the iron gate simultaneously, which instantly transported him to the Yawning Portal tavern halfway across the world. Using the alias Jareth, he established a fifty-gold-piece scholarship fund with bartender Durnan to help aspiring adventurers explore the dungeon beneath the tavern. Needle then used a transportation circle to bring Barlo back to rejoin Shadow and the party. Having successfully acquired the unicorn statue and various magical items and treasures, they prepared to deliver the statue to Pradam Estorich and continue their journey.

Classic Style

Last we left off, Barlo and Shadow, along with their guide Needle, found themselves deep within the Blue Alley—a deadly gauntlet of traps, puzzles, and magical dangers crafted by the wizard Keilier. After recovering from their previous trials and identifying their newfound treasures—a Lantern of Revealing and a Wand of Secrets—the party pressed onward through chambers filled with deception and danger. They navigated rooms of counterfeit coins, descended into fiery pits to retrieve a moonstone while enduring searing heat, and battled smoke mephits in a haze-filled chamber suspended above a twenty-foot drop. Through cunning and combat prowess, they overcame skeletal ambushes, avoided deadly swinging blades, and carefully extracted gemstones from cursed skulls that spawned shadowy guardians.   The true test came when they discovered the mysterious gate room, where a cryptic riddle spoke of entering "as you entered life" and grasping both jewel and iron to claim the truest reward. After much deliberation, Barlo interpreted the instructions literally—stripping naked, clutching a gemstone, and grasping the iron gate. In an instant, he was whisked halfway across the world to the legendary Yawning Portal tavern, where he established a scholarship fund for aspiring adventurers before being transported back to his companions. Having successfully acquired the unicorn statue that Pradam Estorich required, along with various magical treasures and hard-won experience, the party now prepares to deliver their prize and continue their journey, knowing that greater challenges surely await them on the road ahead.

Snarky Style

Welcome to the Blue Alley, where the wizard Keilier apparently decided that "deadly obstacle course" was the perfect interior design choice. Our heroes got voluntold into helping Garrett's Thieves Guild navigate this death trap, because nothing says "team building exercise" like navigating rooms filled with fake treasure, fire pits, exploding books, and smoke mephits who really need to work on their anger management. Barlo spent most of the dungeon either naked, on fire, or both—which is honestly peak barbarian energy. He climbed into an incinerator full of fire elementals for a shiny rock, got stripped by a magic mirror because he dared to look at a unicorn statue, and eventually teleported buck-naked to the Yawning Portal tavern halfway across the world. You know, just a normal Tuesday.   But here's the thing: Barlo used his unexpected nude teleportation to set up a fifty-gold scholarship fund for aspiring adventurers under the alias "Jareth," which is genuinely the most wholesome thing to come out of a man appearing naked in a bar. Meanwhile, Shadow was the MVP with tactical spike zones that turned skeletons into pincushions, while Needle just had to watch these chaos gremlins loot a wizard's elaborate prank dungeon. The party walked away with a unicorn statue, a moonstone, some gemstones from cursed skulls, magical items, and the knowledge that Keilier's idea of "treasure" included rooms that literally spell out "all fake" in copper coins. At least Durnan gave Barlo a free beer for his troubles.

Middle English Style

Harken well, ye gentlefolk brave, Of heroes bold who treasures crave, Through Blue Alley's deadly maze they went, Where Keilier's traps their courage bent, With Barlo strong and Shadow wise, They sought the unicorn as their prize!   In chambers false with coins of naught, And fiery pits where moonstones caught, Through smoke and mephits' ashen breath, Our Barlo danced with raging death, His mighty blows did strike them down, While Shadow's magick earned renown!   The mirror'd room did claim his clothes, Left standing bare from head to toes, Yet undeterred, with eyes held fast, The unicorn statue gained at last, Through lightning halls and blades that swing, They conquered every deadly thing!   The skeletons rose with minotaur fell, But Shadow's spikes did serve them well, Through gemstone skulls and trapped floors wide, With wand and wit as their guide, Each chamber cleared, each secret found, Till gate of iron did astound!   "As entered life," the riddle spoke clear, So Barlo stripped without a fear, Grasped jewel and iron, vanished away, To Yawning Portal far astray! There Jareth's fund for heroes made, Ere homeward bound through magic's aid!

Limerick Style

The party explored Keilier's maze, Through fire pits and smoky haze. They fought mephits with glee, Found coins fake as can be, And Barlo survived the incinerator's blaze.   A mirror room held treasure so bright, A unicorn statue in sight. Barlo closed both his eyes, But got a nude surprise, When his clothes vanished right out of sight!   Through lightning and blades they did creep, Past skeletons piled in a heap. Shadow's spikes caused great pain, While Barlo fought again, And gemstones from dark skulls they'd reap.   At the gate Barlo stripped down with care, Grabbed jewel and iron while bare. He vanished away, To the Portal that day, And left fifty gold for adventurers there!   With Needle's magic circle complete, Barlo returned to his fleet. The unicorn won, Their mission now done, They'd conquered the Blue Alley's feat!
