Session 8: Second Christmas

General Summary

Valiteen, Forseti, and ART woke in the night. They answered the camp's alarm which lead them to find the site of the slain yeti in Camp Hope. They stepped through the lingering portal which delivered them into the Penthouse where the trio officially received their cards, marking their entry into the strange holiday realm.

Their journey continued as a group of reindeer offered them a ride across the glittering snowy landscape to the looming tower. There, they reunited with the rest of the party and activated the lanterns that gave them immunity to the cold for 24 hours. Though the bell atop the tower beckoned, the group agreed to delay ringing it, choosing instead to explore the narrow path branching off from the tower’s base.

This trail was framed by a gate and led them to the shrine. In an attempt to respect the shrines that they found there, the left the following offerings:

  • Left wood scraps to honor the goat.
  • Offered shiny trinkets to honor the cat.
  • The gave wine to the Budda, receiving a new card (Bright and Merry) which was bestowed upon Forseti.
  • Left bread as an offering at the Fey alter.

Following the offerings, they went to explore the Fishing Lodge. There, they encountered a lonely snowman who mourned the loss of his hat. They agreed to get him his hat and he explained that a raven stole the hat from him. The party bartered with a raven (trading a light gem for the missing hat) and returned it to the grateful snowman. After scavenging the lodge for resources, they confronted and defeated the hostile occupant inside, harvesting the creature afterward.

Next, the party ventured into Ebin’s childhood home. Inside, they unearthed his mother’s journal, discovered a stuffed rabbit that belonged to him, and uncovered a secret door to reveal where the family hid their Fey relics. Within, they chose to claim the fire-themed item.

Meanwhile, Jaxon woke during the night and also entered the portal, earning a card and receiving the Samaritan. He made an ally with the person that was summoned by the card. He also accepted the offered reindeer ride across the snowy landscape. He rejoined the group moments before their battle with a mimic lurking in the house, which they successfully dispatched.

After finishing in Ebin's house, they went to the shop, where they found an intriguing note, browsed the many available goods, and purchased clothing, boots, and mistletoe.

Notes

The Deck of Merry Things

  • Gideon drew the Gift. The bearer of this card receives Advantage on Persuasion until the end of the adventure.
  • Logan drew the Idiot: The bearer of this card must wear the stupidest Christmas hat you can lay your hands on. If you don’t have one, make a really crappy one out of paper. And write “idiot” on it just so everyone gets it. In addition to wearing the hat, the bearer loses 3 points of intelligence.
  • Liam drew the Grinch: The holder of the card loses their most treasured possession - usually a magic item. If they do not own one, then a magic item (or falling that, money, heirlooms, teeth etc) is taken from one of the other members of the party. This one is good for getting your players to hate each other.
  • The Nanohealer was put into the box
  • Valiteen drew Black Midwinter. The bearer of this card receives The Curse of The Black Midwinter. Lower their HP total by 10 for the remainder of the adventure or until removed.
  • Forseti drew Ghosts. The curse of ignorance. The bearer loses one quarter of their Vessel (round down, I’m not a monster) and they cannot use their River.
  • Foresti got another card at the Shrine and drew Merry and Bright. This gave him the single use item Merry and Bright with the ability Roll Redo. You undo a single recent event by forcing a reroll of any die roll made within the last round (including your last turn). Reality reshapes itself to accommodate the new result. For example, the wish could undo an ally’s failed saving throw or a foe’s Critical Hit. You can force the reroll to be made with Advantage or Disadvantage, and you choose whether to use the reroll or the original roll.
  • Jaxon drew Samaritan and gained an ally who is now aiding him in battle: Zim-Toa .

Next Session

  • Those party members that have not yet completed their Down Time will be given the option to do so after the Christmas Episode is completed.

Session 7: Christmas Episode

Down Time

The party will be getting 8 (1d10) weeks of down time. This is 56 days. Consider what your characters will be doing with their down time and plan this ahead of the session to make things run a little smoother for everyone. When the down time ends, the session will resume on the morning of Feb 14, 113.

Review the Down Time Options to plan ahead for what you'd like to do for your down time.

Down Time Events

Paychecks
  • Happens on 1/1/114 and 2/1/114 during the down time.

On the first of the month everyone gets paid. If you are of a rank within a faction that affords you a monthly income, this is when that payment is received.

Rent
  • Happens on 1/1/114 and 2/1/114 during the down time.

This is also when you owe rent. This means that you need to decide on where you are going to be living for the next month and pay that out. If you cannot pay rent then you will be homeless this month. This means that you will either need to take advantage of faction housing or hope that a fellow party member will house you for the month in their lodging.

Christmas
  • The Christmas episode occurs during the down time as a celebration for the in game holiday. This takes place during Christmas Eve.

Decide how you would like your characters to celebrate Christmas as we will do a roleplaying session of the holiday celebrations if there is anything you'd like to include.

Birthday
  • Jaxon Frost's Birthday 1/22/114

Jaxon will be turning 22 years old. How does he celebrate? If there is anything that you'd like to have them do that's special let me know so we can work that out a head of time. I'd like to make sure that we have a fun birthday "episode" for you.

Sanity Check

Rom will need to complete a Sanity check at the beginning of the down time to determine the effects of his 2 Dark implants.

Note

These special events (holidays and birthdays) will not take away from the down time. It will be assumed that the celebrations of such events have occurred around whatever work and survival tasks need to be completed within the camp.
