Module: The Thalassian Heist

Waking up in the back of a moving cart is always an interesting experience. The last thing the heroes remember is falling into some form of portal, so why is this girl saying they wiped their own memories and telling them that they need to rob the palace?   Suitable for level 10 characters.

Plot points/Scenes

The characters awaken in the back of a moving cart, and are told by Imogene that they are important and famous heroes who wiped their own memories before going into hiding. They are told that they need to retrieve an artifact weapon from the palace where it was stored, because the palace has been infiltrated by a lieutenant of the Fates, and the King is about to hand over the artifact, believing the heroes to have turned evil. The cart stops in an alley, allowing the party to either walk in through an unguarded doorway, or to climb up onto the roof.   The doorway leads to the servant's quarters, some social interactions and a comedic fight.   The roof leads to a stealth section, spying on the lieutenant, and a duel with Xaxis.   Both routes converge at the courtyard, where the commotion that could be heard even from outside the walls is revealed to be the Boar King, locked into a cage to be delivered to the palace fight pits. Can be freed and allied with, or ignored, which will cause him to break out later anyway, but not ally with the party.   The party then travels down into the vaults, where they see that the Fates have beaten them there, and are talking with the King. The players must hide in the shadows and break in via the access tunnels.   Once they reach and pick up the artifact, an alarm will go off, but Gabriel will blast open the back wall for them to flee. They will then run and exit into an abandoned wing of the palace, to come face to face with Lorelei and two guards. She will then fight the players, wanting to save them from having to fight the rest of the Fates.   After a short rest, Galron will be knocked through the wall by Korlath in his draconic form, and then the boss fight will ensue.   After the fight, the King's guard are closing in, but Imogene shows up with the cart and they escape.

Themes

Mistaken identity, lots of twins and clones, and inexplicable magic and coincidences.

Structure

Exposition

The heroes have been adventuring together for a while, and last remember falling through a portal when the floor gave out during a climactic battle. They are informed that they are famous heroes in the unfamiliar land they find themselves in, however they wiped their memories before going into hiding. They are being called in again however, as the Fates are once again moving, and are trying to reclaim the artifacts that the heroes used to fend them off last time. They are currently in the city of Thalassa, a city resting on floating platforms in the ocean, inhabited by a mix of sea elves, avariel, arakocra, and tritons. The king was once an ally of theirs, and was given the weapon for safe keeping, however he has since lost hope, believing that they have turned evil and that now the Fates are the only ones that can protect the world against them.

Conflict

The Fates are about to claim the artifact from the King, and the heroes definitely have no memory of anything between falling into the portal and now. If the seemingly truthful girl in front of them is speaking the truth, then the fate of the world is at stake. She also promises that their memories will be returned once they get to the place that they are stored, but is adamant that this mission must be accomplished first.

Rising Action

Duel with Xaxis and/or the Calamari Construct. The release of the Boar King and the stealth portion of the vaults. The heroes are trying to remain undetected, but the agents of the Fates are on the verge of procuring the artifact.

Climax

The artifact is stolen, and the heroes run into the fight with Lorelei. After a short rest to heal their wounds and let the heat die down, they are about to move out when Galron is knocked through the wall by Korlath, now in his draconic form. They must fight their way free of the palace and kill Korlath.

Falling Action

The fight ends, and as the King's guard gathers around the heroes and the Boar King, the girl pulls up in the cart outside the broken gates. The players flee the scene, and escape the city. They are amnesiac, wanted, and victims of identity theft, but they are alive, and have the artifact.

Resolution

The heroes ride towards the mountains, artifact in hand, with the aim of reclaiming their memories and the other artifacts.

Components

Goals

To reclaim their memories, prevent the Fates from claiming the artifact, and work out if they're being played for fools.

Hooks

Someone is imitating the heroes, there are artifact weapons apparently belonging to them scattered across the world, and they are being promised their memories back if they steal some shit, something they are very good at doing.

Stakes

If the artifact is taken by the Fates, the players must then steal it back in order to stop them or risk the destruction of the world.

Moral Quandaries

Are they being lied to? Is it really okay for them to cause so much destruction in the palace of an apparent ally, even if he has been misled?

Cruel Tricks

The heroes are wanted in a half dozen countries, and have no idea why they are actually doing this.

Red Herrings

The Fates are described as weak, but manipulative. They are manipulative, but part of their facade is hiding their true power.
