Faster than Light Travel
Faster-than-light (also FTL, superluminal, or supercausal) travel and communication are the conjectural propagation of matter and information faster than the speed of light. This is achieved thanks to a special particle known as a tachyon that when introduced with energy causes the particle and everything around it to propel forward thousand of times faster than light. This engine was first theorized in 2058 after tachyons were observed for the first time in the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland. By 2063 a true FTL drive was built. This would get the official name of Hawking Drive in honor of the late great Stephen William Hawking.
This engine that was capable of this was first only used for inter-system travel. Turning a 9 month trip from Earth to Mars into 9 minutes. The first successful manned jump took place in 2065. The decade that followed saw a sharp rise in the Hawking Drive being placed in every long distance space vessel. Indeed, this greatly influenced the migration of humanity between Earth, Mars, as well as the mining and research colonies that were now being built throughout the solar system.
Come 2084 during a routine trip between Earth and Jupiter Forward Operating Military Station, a glitch in the Hawking Drive causes the ship overshoot its target destination. The ship is catapulted outside of Sol's influence. The quick thinking of Captain Marcus Ying who luckily was transporting energy fuel cells on this mission managed to with his crew jury rig the energy into their freighter's power supply. This allowed them survive the week long jump. Indeed, our Captain stumbled on one of humanities next greatest frontiers. Proxima Centauri, a new solar system ripe with planets full of untapped resources. Captain Ying manages to with this extra power reverse the jump and a week later finds themselves once more in Sol, just near Pluto Orbital Research Station. Making an emergency docking the word of their trip quickly reaches the ears of every scientist within the Sol system. Humanity would then quickly colonize Proxima within 6 years. The next 30 years humanity continues to colonize many of the other stars that neighbor Sol.
By 3115 the Hawking Drive is still used, although the technology around it has been upgraded to be more efficient and safer. The core of the theory still remains. By our current era ships as small as personal shuttles which only require a single individual to fly have a Hawking Drive aboard.
