Ghazneth
The Ghazneths of Cormyr
“Thus the havoc bearers sleepe, the sleepe of no rests. Thus the sorrow bringers sow, the seeds of their ruine. Thus the death makers kille, the sons of their sons.” — Inscription in High Wealdan, found beneath the Withered Oaks of Wheloon
Overview
The Ghazneths were seven cursed fiends unleashed upon Cormyr in ages past, born from the betrayal of its nobility. Once mortal lords and ladies, they were transformed into winged horrors through the dark union of the green dragon Nalavarauthatoryl the Undying and the chronolich Melkerech.Drawing on ancient fey power nodes buried beneath Cormyr, the pair wove together Netherese chronomancy and draconic lifebinding to tear seven souls from their graves, binding them into eternal servitude. The ritual was intended to rob the Feywild’s Harbingers of their strength, diverting their aspects into mortal vessels. In doing so, Cormyr’s fate became intertwined with the Harbingers themselves; each Ghazneth echoing one of the primal forces of ruin.
The Seven Ghazneths
Each Ghazneth was bound to a Harbinger’s principle; a mortal sin twisted into punishment on the land of Cormyr.Suzara the Scold, Scourge of Blight – Power of Famine. Her touch withered harvest and heart alike.
Ryndala Merendil, the Bloody – Power of Destruction. She spread unrest and civil war through Cormyr.
Boldovar the Mad, the Dark King - Power of Madness. His laughter cursed generations with insanity.
Melineth Turcassan, the Grasping - Power of Pestilence. His breath carried disease to friend and foe.
Luthax the Fiery, the Scourge of Smoke - Power of Fury. He consumed cities in cleansing flame.
Xanthon Cormaeril, the Baneful - Power of Entropy. He commanded swarms and dissolution.
Rowen Cormaeril, the Fallen Consort - Power of Despair. His storms blotted out sun and hope alike.
Each of the seven was interred beneath a tree marked with the same elven verse — a poem of death and rebirth — but each final line different, binding their essence to the soil of Cormyr itself.
Creation and Purpose
The Ghazneths were the product of Melkerech’s obsession with time and Nalavarauthatoryl’s hunger for dominion. By harnessing the seven fey nodes once dedicated to the Queen of Thorns’ Harbingers, the pair attempted to sever the Feywild’s influence from the mortal world. But in stealing that power, they fractured the balance. The Ghazneths became monstrous reflections of the Harbingers, and their deaths in the Year of the Dragonfall seemingly cast the plans of the lich to dust.
Melkerech retreated into study of an eighth harbinger shortly after, leaving behind only the echo of his experiments.
