"I'd rather freeze to death in those icy waters than step foot on that island! Its cursed, i'll tell ya!
-A Rumalian sailor at the sight of Vist Island.
Located in the far reaches of the Leviathan sea, west of the great
Island of Haiska, is the island of Vist. Barren, rocky, windswept and frozen, the island remains inhabited, and is mostly known for the large amounts of ghosts and spirits that inhabits it.
History
The island was discovered in the summer of 987 bc, about a decade after the
Island of Haiska. Large and easily accessible deposits of iron and copper were found, and a small colony was set up with around 40 settlers. The large amount of
Silver Grass was ignored as the colonist didn't know what its presence signified at the time.
2 months after the colony was set up, shipss came back with supplies and more colonists, and found the small colony completly abandoned. The communal house at the centre of the would-be village was burned down. A journal was found in the communal house, written by the colony's governor. In it, he wrote about the rapidly degrading situation in the settlement, culminating in the burning of the communal house.
According to what was written, the colony had been plagued by constant hauntings ever since it was first established. Specificaly, ghosts would frequently harrass people in their sleep, or during their work. Many colonists went crazy due to a lack of sleep and extreme paranoia.
An entry written just a few weeks before the book was found, detailed a rally of the citizens against what they called "the ghost leviathan" This went poorly, as the journal's next entry went on to say that half the men were "lost", and the rest decided to huddle inside the communal house, with the goal of waiting things out, until supply ships would arrive so they could leave the island. However, this would never happen, as when the ships returned, everyone had dissapeared.
Theories
The bodies of both groups of colonists were never found. In the next few months and years, Necromancers were brought to the island, and confirmed what everyone who visisted the island knew already: The island was extremely haunted. What was more ominous was what they didn't find: The souls of the deceased colonists. Bodies missing is odd, but not unusual, but souls missing is nearly unheard of, especialy when the bodies aren't burried, which would be the case here.
This, to most scholars, suggests that whatever attacked the colonists, not only consumed their bodies, but also their souls. If that is the case, only one creature is known to be able to do that, and those are
Demons. Other scholars point out that no demons were ever found in or around the island, which means that they were either killed by something else, somehow left the island themselves, or the demon that killed them is able to conceal himself from visitors, which is not an ability that they are known to have.
What an interesting island! It gave some serious "Ranaoke" vibes and since this happens to be one my favorite real life mysteries I loved it even more. Very spooky and a great read <3
Oh, thank you! Roanoke colony was definitely a big inspiration for this! I'm glad you found it spooky and thank you for reading and liking! <3
