Drow

Drow are infused with the magic of The Underdark, an underground realm of wonders and horrors rarely seen on the surface above. They are at home in shadows and, thanks to your innate magic, learn to conjure forth both light and darkness. They tend to have stark white hair and grayish skin of many hues.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Due to the drows sensitivity to sun they are almost entirely found in The Underdark, where they are known under the umbrella term of all underdark humanoids as Núathdhel.   Most of the drow population lives within the City of Spiders, Menzoberranzan, underneath the Republic of Ponhearia, approximately a weeks travel to the north from the capital Mostall. Here the drow are ruled by The Matron Mothers.

Gender Ideals

The Drow is a fiercly matriarchal society and believes men to be a tool only used for warfare and procreation. The men of drow society lives under the whims of women, and most do what they are told without question. Most become strong warriors as their strength makes them useful, which can earn them a place as consort to a matriarch and in that way give them both protection and a high place in society.   When a drow becomes pregnant, they perform several rituals and pray to Lolth for a girl. If they do not give birth to a girl they believe, they have been cursed by the Spider Queen.

Common Dress Code

Within the lolthite societies of the drow, there are very strict fashion codes, dictating both which types of clothing and hairstyles a drow of a certain stature is allowed to wear. This code is meant for easy identification of the individuals social station as well as what house they are associated with.

Hair

Regardles of gender, most drow grow their hair long, and decorate it with pins and webbing made of a variety of materials, spanning from simple cotton threads to precious metals. The coloration of drow hair varies form stark white or silver, to yellow or even coppe. However, the coloration reflects the drows superiority, as stark white hair are concidered closer related to the Spider Queen, while silver hair is concidered to be closer related to Selûne, and it is a common saying that silver haired drow are slow.
Hairstyles and station
While it is common to use pins in ones hair, the materials of the pins are restricted, so that commoners are only allowed to wear pins of common materials such as woods, fungi, and common rocks. Those associated with a noble house is allowed to wear more expensive materials such as common metals, however precious metals and gems are only allowed by high standing members of the noble houses.
Furthermore, decorating your hair with webbing is only allowed by those within the clergy of the Spider Queen, and threads made of precious metals or spider silk are only allowed by those in the highest ranks of the church.   Hairstyles specifically is also restricted by stature, as more extravagant hairstyles can only be worn by nobles. Only a simple knot or ponytail are allowed by commoners. Though extreme hairstyles are restricted to the nobles, many high society female drow wear their hair down, or held up by hair decorations, to show the length of their hair, as drow let their hair grow their entire lives, so long hair signifies their seniority. Large hairstyles can also be used to signify the seniority, as the more complex styles require a lot of hair. These hairstyles could be achieved by extra hair-pieces and extensions, but if one is caught having use any of these it would be highly embarrassing to a level that one might become a social pariah.

Clothing

Every major house has an associated pattern or color that only they are allowed to wear, as well as an insignia that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a certain household. Any drow that neglects to follow this dresscode, are to be punished by the house who's colors they violated.
Clothes and station
Commoners are only allowed to wear clothes made of simple materials and designs. Only drow associated with a noble house are allowed to wear jewelry, as well as finer fabrics. This means that merchants often associate themselves with one house or another, to be allowed to decorate themselves.
Only high standing members of noble houses are allowed to wear spider silks, and only the clergy of the Spider Queen and the Matron Mothers are allowed to wear webbing.   Drow worshipping Lolth, believes that they should humble themselves in front of the Spider Queen, therefore the most devote of Lolth, and those in the highest standings, wear very little or very revealing clothing. It is unseeming for a commoner to not be covered, as they are believed to be so much beneath Lolth, that they should hide themselves in shame. Since most drow societies are Lolthite Matriarchies, this means that the highest standing most often wears the least clothes, while the details and decorations on what they do wear are the most intricate, and of the highest quality.

History

Though rarely talked about in Núathdhel drow societies, it is believed by some that the drow are ancestors of the moon elf worshipers of Selûne that didn't follow her tenets of acceptance, equality, and tolerance, but instead chose to cast away people in need, and punish those that didn't worship the Lady of Silver. For their crimes the elves were banished to The Underdark where they would never be able to bathe in the light of the moon, and their offspring were cursed with enhanced cruelty, and a feeling of superiority towards others, and therefore wouldn't take care of their elderly parents or work together. It was believed that this curse would've been the end of these elves, cursed to hate and depise one another, and therefore uncapable of surviving the harsh environment of The Underdark. It was during the time immidiately after being shunned, that the Spider Queen Lolth appeared to them. She saw the potential in their cruelty, and loved to watch the chaos that came from it. So, she decided to help them. She granted the cruelest of them all powers to shape the society as they saw fit, which created the society as it is today. To survive The Underdark, Lolth altered the elves in her own image, and gave them magic capabilities to fit.   It is believed that Lolth was once the wife of Corellon Larethian but was cast aside for Selûne, and that the Spider Queen saw herself in the castaway elves. More cynical believes she saw the perfect opportunity for revenge instead.   Although the history is rarely talked of, as The Church of Lolth has made sure to alter history to be more flattering and fitting for their worship of the Spider Queen, a hatred for Moon Elves emerged in the darkness that were never entirely extenguished, and have even possibly been encouraged by Lolth. This hatred culminated in the Mass Extinction of Moon Elves starting around 2000 AC. The Moon Elves had at this point in time dwindled in numbers and spread out all over the continent, making them vulnerable to attacks. The drow took full advantage of this and actively raided small settlements of the Moon Elves, and sought out groups of nomades as they neared larger temples of Selûne. Those that joined the raids were often awarded with boons by Lolth, which encouraged the Drow. Within a milinia the Moon Elves were so few in numbers they were virtually extinct.
