Kalarel the Vile
Kalarel the Vile is one of the most wanted men in the Old World. A misanthropic Kraken priest who believes that all land-based life was a mistake, and plans to bring about a great flood.
Not much is known about Kalarel's early life, but it was one filled with a great deal of strife and troubles. He quickly became morose, developing a deep hatred of all other humans and wandered destitute for a time, not caring if he lived or died, until one day he fell from a ship and sank beneath the waves, embracing the cold oblivion.
Much to his surprise though, the oblivion embraced back.
To his shock, Kalarel did not die but instead found himself face to face with The Kraken itself. It spoke to him, and although Kalarel didn't understand the language he felt like he understood the intent. This thing was the true source of all life. The ocean itself! And he could feel its rage at the world. He felt it too. He begged to allow the creature to accept him as its servant and that he will someday, somehow return all life to the ocean as it should be. The Kraken seemed to agree, and made Kalarel part of itself in exchange for his left eye, mutating his body into something altogether inhuman. Kalarel then set out to figure out how best to reclaim life as he had promised.
That is when he learned about the Red Gold of Lorenzo.
Finding this gold and learning its story infuriated Kalarel, reinforcing his idea of land creatures' selfish cruelty towards the sea, but it also inspired him. If he connected himself to the gold, he could use the curse to advantage, building a workforce of sea spawn. With these sea spawn, he would build the Tower of the Abyss, a dread tower made of corpses which in turn would allow him to open a portal to the Abyss, allowing countless demons to stream onto the surface unabated.
With his life force bound to the gold, Kalarel can sense its presence. What's more, when the gold's curse spreads to a new host, Kalarel can sense that, too. He can then allow himself to appear wherever the gold is, provided it isn't further west than his base of operations in GreyCrag. He gathers up the new corpses and uses them to build his tower ever higher. A remove curse spell works on individual pieces, but the only way to end the curse is to put an end to Kalarel.
Kalarel was well on his way to the completion of the Abyssal Tower, but his activities did not go unnoticed by the NWTC, and he was eventually captured by Eleanor Seawind. At the time of his capture, his bounty was set at 20,000GP, the highest of any Old World criminal at the time.
Kalarel has just one surviving relative - his 16-year-old daughter, Clarisse. Clarisse saw her father's wanted poster years after assuming he was lost at sea and now seeks to find him and figure out what's happening to him. If Kalarel meets her, he'll try to make her like him, and her refusal will hurt him dearly.
On Grey Crag, Kalarel is treated like a god, just like Lorenzo before him. Although he tries to divert the kuo-toa's adoration towards the Kraken, the kuo-toa look to him and him alone. He actually treats them with kindness, recognising them as creatures of the sea and will become enraged with anyone who hurts them. Instead, he just rolls with it, employing the priests with scrying on his enemies and tasking the other kuo-toa with small, simple tasks to keep them busy.
He presides over GreyCrag in his Abyssal Tower, a tower whose mortar is made from the (still living) corpses of sea spawn, whose suffering he draws on for demon summoning. He also makes it his home, revelling in the suffering of land-dwelling creatures. He those have a soft spot for sea creatures, however, and has a special fondness for molluscs. He has tanks filled with octopi, squid and sea slugs, and is often seen cradling a giant snail in his arms like a child. His most prized possession is his flock of flail snails, which he hand rears like a farmer rears cattle. When one grows sick and dies, he butchers it for its meat and uses its unique shell to create armour, although he prefers not to wear any if he can help it.
Although he's convinced that his plan is what the Kraken wants, he has no way of actually knowing. The Kraken bestows its power on anyone with a desire to be free strong enough that they'd give up a body part. It has no opinion on him whatsoever. Although it can sense his presence in the New World and hear his calls, it doesn't answer because it likes or agrees with him, it's using him as a targeting system. If he's sending out a signal, it means that there are likely to be tasty morsels near him. That's it. Golzarga understands this, but Kalarel doesn't.
