The Kraken

In the New World, there lurks a mysterious being of such power that strikes equal parts fear and awe in sailors and settlers alike. Despite the wide array of cultires and peoples across the sea, one thing unites them: the terror, the majesty, and the fear of the Kraken.

Description

Few have seen the kraken, and even fewer live to tell about it. Those that do decribe an enormous squid-like being larger than any whale, that creates tidal waves simply by swimming, is always accompanied by storms, and with tentacles that can crush ships and stone woth ease. Descriptions from there very and often contradict. Some describe seeing enormous lobster like claws, others a draconic head that breathes fire, others still say it has human like arms instead of tentacles. Most of these are in fact true and false all at the same time, as the kraken's true nature is truly unfathomable to a mortal mind...
If one were to get a good look at the kraken's body, they might notice an extra tentacle at the end of its body that extends deeper into the ocean. A particularly perceptive observer might notice that this tail-like tentacle slowly turns transparent as it goes. This is because this tentacle slowly phases into the ethereal plane. A mage that enters the ethereal plane will see tentacles stretching all around.
All of these ethereal tentacles slowly merge into a place deep beneath the waves deep into the New World, to the kraken's true body - a truly enormous squid entity with hundreds of tentacles and thousands of eyes and teeth, larger than most islands. The 'krakens' that most people describe are actually just the real kraken's tentacles, spread out over thousands of miles throughout the entire New World.

Behaviour

The kraken is as unpredictable as it is mysterious. There is no pattern to kraken attacks, as far as scholars can tell. It attacks ships and settlements alike, seeminbly at random. The only correlation found is that they seem to get more common the further into the New World you go.
A kraken attack is heralded by a sudden storm. Black clouds laced with lightning will appear much faster than any natural phenomenon, and lightning strikes are much more frequent. Tidal waves and tsunamis are much more likely. Then the sea itself swells into an gargantuan mound as the kraken's immense weight displaces the water. The kraken then begins its attack using its many muscular tentacles. Despite its monstrous form, the kraken often fights in a surprisingly intelligent manner, targetting powerful spellcasters and weapons such as cannons first. Lightning also strikes flammable surfaces. The storms that accompany the kraken and seem to do its bidding lead some people to theorise that the inexplicable weather patterns of the New World are, in fact, the kraken's doing.
The length of a kraken attack varies immensely. Sometimes an entire island can be wiped from the map, other times it simply leaves suddenly, as if satisfied. Rarely, the creatures defending themselves against it deal enough damage to drive it off. There are even reports of it being killed, though of course, what really died during those incidents was merely one of its tentacles.
Victims that are pulled into the ocean during a kraken attack often find themselves changed, able to access unusual powers and abilities and often claiming that the kraken is the true god of the world, and that they hear it in their dreams. Such individuals often go on to form cults in the kraken's honour.
