Alfyr

Geography

Alfyr is an odd planet. Its axis is tilted at 40 degrees, and its north pole always points in the direction of the sun. Because of this, the planet is broken into two regions, light and dark, with two sub regions each.

Light side:

Light side is the northern half of the planet. It is broken into two rings, the inner ring and the outer ring. The inner ring is nearest the north pole and is a region of the planet where the sun never sets in the sky. The outer ring of light is closer to the equator and experiences partial night cycles that can last anywhere from 30 mins to a few hours depending on where you are, with the very outer edge having consistent 12 hour nights.

Dark side:

Dark side is the southern half of the planet. It is also broken into two rings, the inner ring and the outer ring. The inner ring is nearest to the south pole and is a region where they never see the sun. Instead they are bathed in starlight, experience beautiful shimmering cloud lights, and mostly have luminescent plantlife. The outer ring of the dark side is closer to the equator and experiences partial day cycles that can last anywhere from 30 mins to a few hours depending on where you are, with the very outer edge having consistent 12 hour nights.

Atmosphere:

One odd feature of the planet is that its outer atmosphere is safe to breathe and is covered in a massive range of floating islands. The planet has no moon but it is speculated that it once did and that its orbit decayed and it shattered into chunks which are now the islands found on the planet today.   These islands can be as large as small continents to as small as houses, and their floating nature makes them drift on planetary currents, causing many islands to migrate.   Many cultures on Alfyr have managed to create a way to stabilize the islands, allowing them to control how and where they drift, and even to prevent them from moving at all. They would do this by placing great crystal structures into each island which would then be bound with a complex stream of magic. These Spires as they are called were made a very long time ago and the knowledge of their creation in modern day has been forgotten with some believing they were placed by gods.   Just underneath this earth-like layer of the outer atmosphere is a denser layer of gas often called the “Sea of Clouds.” The atmosphere beneath this sea is increasingly denser and less breathable as well as toxic to inhale. Any who are too far beneath the sea would become sick from the toxic air, or if you go too far, you could get crushed by the atmospheric pressure.
