Mancesham
Demographics
The primary groups are elven and human, with elves comprising nearly the entirety of the upper class, and mostly Slovian humans mixing with elves, half-elves, and some dwarves along with a smattering of other less common races to create the lower class. The split is roughly 40% elves, 30% humans, 15% half-elves, 8% dwarves, and 7% other.
Government
The Viceroy, Morristis Pekkanen, is the technical leader of the city, as well as the region, though he hands off much of the day-to-day operations in the city itself to a small city council consisting of a handful of nobles and elected officials.
The city council is generally well-meaning, though they have historically leaned more towards the needs and well-being of the elven citizens, leading to a system much like the guard which brought on elected officials from the middle class to help accommodate the “less fortunate” and increase trust in city leadership.
Their work is often made harder by the ever-changing laws being handed down by the capital, but their more recent embrace of the non-elven communities has made things much easier.
Defences
The city is surrounded by a significant wall, and has bridges facing the western areas across the main river that potential attackers would likely come from.
Industry & Trade
The largest industries are based on trade and crafting. Mancesham is a key city along the main trade route between Farhaven and Sovermouth, so they have a steady influx of products and materials from far and wide, which are then resold or turned into new products to sell. This also leads to a large number of inns for the large volume of traveling merchants and other visitors, and specialized merchants that handle the wide variety of items that flow in and out of town. The inns hire a large number of middle and lower class citizens for barmaids, bartenders, entertainers, cooks, and cleaning staff. Merchants will hire middle-class citizens as assistant shopkeepers and apprentice craftsmen, as well as guards for high-value shops.
- High-level craftsmen can make some of the largest sums around due to the limited nature of their work, and their ability to increase trade materials in value.
- Merchants and their assistants tend to be next in line due to high volumes of overall trade.
- Innkeepers can vary widely due to the large amount of competition, though they have gotten more creative in ways to supplement income with additional services or partnerships with other businesses.
- Barkeeps and maids, on the other hand, tend to make a reasonable living through pay and tips and along with popular entertainers, quality ones are often sought after by inns to maintain a valuable reputation.
Guilds and Factions
The Social Courtesies Guild acts as both a union for workers and something of a social group, maintaining events for the members of society that usually are required to entertain others.
The Church of the Seldarine are a major force in the city, occupying the entirety of The Grove District, and maintaining most of the large-scale festivals and holiday celebrations.
The Church of Mystra has a presence in the city, though they keep something of a low profile in comparison to the Seldarine churches both due to their tenets and to prevent friction with the much larger organizations.
The Verdant Watch are the city's guards and protectors, acting as the police as well as a local branch of the state military.
There are a number of smaller noble social clubs, covering a variety of topics, and almost all being primarily an excuse to host parties and gatherings with fancy dress and expensive wines from the region.
The only noble group that is of particular notice is a handful of elven mages called the Vasaryen Eye, who work independently of the churches to gather arcane artifacts and magical knowledge.
History
Mancesham is a long-standing city at the northwestern edge of the elven lands of Louth. It was founded by the Elves early in the development of their kingdom before the region was even officially named.
Geography
Mancesham is just out of the hillier regions of northwestern Louth, in a mixed grassland and temperate forest biome, leading to a moderate seasonal temperature range, with slightly lower than average temperature due to the ability of the wind to move rapidly through the grassland areas.
