Hrymtoth Garrison

Previously known as Gel Bergest before the Toldrunite uprising and coup.   This border fort is one of three settlements the Toldrun See maintains along its southern border with the kingdom of Skerritt. Like the others, this military camp is populated entirely by conscripted individuals and mercenaries, from the soldiers and Watch to the innkeepers and street sweepers. This fort sits roughly at the junction where the Hiram River splits into its eastern path and an offshoot western path known as Moradin's Arm.   Though not nearly as large as Moradin's Watch, the Hrymtoth Garrison is the staging and launching point for many raids across the border. There is a small contingent of Inquisitors stationed here almost permanently, bolstered by conscripted military and mercenary warriors that assist with raids or provide stalwart defense of the See's borders.

Demographics

Because of the high turnover of the populace (due to the conscription rotations in the See), the makeup of the city changes slightly all the time. The majority of the population is almost always dwarvish, at just over 55% normally. The remaining citizens are made up mostly of humans, with various other races represented sporadically. The vast majority of the citizens are either military or military-adjacent such as mercenaries, smiths, armorers, etc. though there are a few hundred people who help support the town as innkeepers, shop owners, and other laborers.

Government

The garrison is commanded by an Oberst (roughly equivalent to a colonel) who reports directly to a General in the Holy City and coordinates with his comrades in the other border forts. He is assisted by a council that oversees various aspects of the fort, such as a housing advisor to build, maintain, and fill the houses.

Defences

The outer walls of the garrison are twenty feet tall and made of massively thick solid stone, with steel reinforcements inside. The watchtowers and gatehouses are equipped with numerous cannons, of both the gunpowder and arcane variety, as well as several ballista and a few trebuchets. As the vast majority of the population are soldiers, there is a complex yet thorough watch and scouting rotation that makes sure every angle of the fort's exterior is watched at all times.

Infrastructure

Compared to the capital city and the less fortified cities, the border forts have more advanced infrastructure. To better accommodate the supply wagons, siege vehicles, and other wheeled transports, the roads to and within the forts are usually paved and well maintained. While there is no running water in buildings, the fort has been able to redirect parts of the Hiram River to several smaller channels, almost canals, that provide fresh water to most of the city. This is augmented by wells throughout the city to ensure the populace does not go without water.

History

This fort was built shortly after the Toldrunites seized power and created the See, in the location that was previously home to a small village. As the Inquisitors embarked on increasingly frequent raids across the southern border - and as the southern neighbors repaid these raids with forays of their own - it became abundantly clear to the leadership in the Holy City that they needed a series of border forts to station troops for both offensive and defensive purposes. Construction began on the two upriver forts - this one and the Joolgot Garrison - at the same time the See began converting the southern port city into a massive fort that would come to be known as Moradin's Watch.

Since its founding, the fort has grown only slightly in over 400 years. It was always intended to house a fighting force of just over 3,000 conscripted and mercenaries, with another 1,000 or so support personnel. The walls have never needed expansion or rebuilding, though the central military, religious, and civic buildings have undergone several renovations and enlargements over the centuries.
