Merefolk
Merefolk live throughout Avarha. Though they have adapted to living on land over the centuries, most still live in places close to the sea or other bodies of water. It is believed they once came from the Realm of the Sea during a Realm Conjunction many ages ago.
Culture
Birth & Baptismal Rites
Eggs are laid and then fertilized in a large tank of sea water in the Nursery. The eggs will remain there until they hatch after six months. Once born, the baby meres will remain together in the tank until they develop enough to leave the tank and be educated by the Nursery workers. These Nursery workers are of the small percentage of merefolk who do have strong parental instincts, and therefore spend their entire lives helping to raise merefolk children.
Ideals
Courtship Ideals
Merefolk do not experience the same biological drives as other peoples to reproduce and raise offspring. When merefolk do feel the drive periodically to reproduce, they journey to their nearest Nursery. There they meet up with others who have felt the same drive, and participate in egg laying and egg fertilizing rituals until the urge is satisfied. Egg-laying merefolk might lay as many as two eggs a day into the nursery tank during this time, with egg-sowing merefolk contributing once a day to the nursery tank.
Relationship Ideals
Merefolk do not have the same relationships as many other peoples in Avarha. They don't take partners or even experience love in the same way so many other peoples do. Instead, the relationships they value are those within their community, especially when they meet other merefolk in the world.
