Tideholder

Tideholders are special scarves worn by Merefolk to keep their gills moist and allow them to be comfortable living on land.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Tideholders function through the use of enchantments that keep the scarves moist to the touch without that moisture transferring to other materials. The moisture being held close to the gills of a Merefolk wearer keeps those gills moisturized even in the driest areas of Avarha. The magic does need to be refreshed periodically, but it still makes life much easier for Merefolk who desire to venture far from bodies of water.

Manufacturing process

The creation process of Tideholders is considered relatively simple. Any material can be used to make the scarf itself, and the scarf does not need to be created with the goal of becoming a Tideholder. In fact, many Merefolk make or purchase scarves in styles they like, and have the Tideholder enchantment put on the scarf afterward.

Significance

Tideholders have made life much easier for Merefolk choosing to live on land and away from bodies of water. Though they can breathe air on land just fine, Merefolk do have gills that allow them to breathe underwater, and these gills need to be kept moist even when not in use. Without Tideholders, Merefolk would need to constantly moisten their gills with water frequently. This makes life on land frustrating, especially when away from humid areas. The creation of the enchantment that makes Tideholders has greatly improved life for many Merefolk in Avarha.

Raw materials & Components

The creation of Tideholders requires magic. In fact, the magic itself is more important than the type of fabric/fiber used in the creation process.
