Axolotl
A Gift For a God
Long ago, the Axolotl mortal race was created by Yasra, God of the Wilds, as a symbol of friendship for Geryu, God of Oceans in hopes to get the older God to turn to Yasra's side on the argument of Mortal Civilizations. Unlike their smaller counterparts, theses creatures were capable of life both in Geryu's waters and Yasra's forests. However, as more mortal races become aware of their existence the Axolotl people became known as a delicacy among the Tabaxi and Aarakocras, and started being hunted for their exquisite flavor and texture.
Divine Mutation
As Axolotls became increasingly known as a delicacy among the more aggressive races, they went from being a hunted people to livestock—bred and consumed by the unruly and cruel. Offended by the treatment of her gift and by Yasra's apathy toward their suffering, Geryu took it upon herself to aid the small creatures. She granted them abilities and favors that allowed them not only to escape but to fight back against their enemies.
People of the Ponds
Out of necessity from their reliance on water, Axolotls tend to not migrate very often. They’ll instead focus on building up permanent settlements near areas of fresh water and focus on both intellectual pursuits and the maintenance of their water source. In settlements other than their own, they’re often directly involved with water treatment and preserving it in times of scarcity. They’re also well known for their clay and earthenware, and it’s said that an Axolotl bowl can go through a ‘thousand hells’ before cracking.
