Dragon's Tooth Swamp
Though this are is called a swamp, it is quite the misnomer. The lands are divided into three areas (upper, middle, and lower), each with their own characteristics...some would even say personalities. Regardless of how these lands are described, they are dangerous and should only be traveled if absolutely necessary.
Geography
The upper parts of the swamp are more akin to salt flats due to repeated flooding and tsunami. The countryside, which was once filled with farmlands and small villages, has been transformed into fetid marshes filled with sinkholes, quicksand pits, and tide pools. This area, while dangerous, is the most mapped by the surviving denizens of the peninsula. With the right guide and/or map, one can traverse the salt marshes with relative safety.
The middle lands are a large tidal basin. This area was the most fertile area of the peninsula; however, the flooding of the river in addition to repeated storms along the coast turned this once verdant plain into a semi-drowned marsh. Partially submerged groves of trees, peat bogs, and silt traps litter the basin, and while it is possible to traverse this area on foot, the easiest way to travel would be by boat. Finally, there is a pervasive mist that covers the basin, which makes a guide and/or map a necessity for safe travel.
The lower lands house the river that changed course centuries before. A new river delta has formed at the mouth of the river forming a silt field/wetland, but the rest of the river lands are relatively stable. There are some swamps and marshes, but for the most part, the area is populated by new small forests and verdant grasslands. The farther south one travels, however, takes one into the badlands. The soft fields of the river lands yield to semi-arid plains that some call the "desert with no sand."
Localized Phenomena
The large tidal basin is covered in a pervasive mist that rarely clears. Many strange beasts make their homes in the mists, but some say that a race of cursed beings live in the center of the basin and harrass travels going through their lands. There are also rumors that some aberrant creatures have made their homes in the sinkholes.
Fauna & Flora
All manor of beast and creature make their homes in these lands:
- carnivorous plants that can enslave the minds of beast with powerful spores and pheromones.
- Monstrous amphibians and reptiles.
- Aberrations drawn from a breach in the veil.
- Vine blights
- Shambling mounds
- dragons???
History
The Dragon's Tooth Swamps used to be low salt flats in the north and verdant plains to the south, with some scattered forests here and there. However, when the Great Calamity hit the empire, the nearby river flooded so catastrophically that it changed course by about hundred miles or more. This caused massive flooding in the fields, and it all but destroyed the farms and villages in the area. A tiny tributary was left behind that eventually caused the tidal basin to form. The place flooded continuously, and things might have stabilized and been livable had a second calamity not struck the peninsula. A series of massive quakes racked the sea floor off the western coast causing tidal waves to sweep the country side. The city fo Argesh was ruined, the salt flats became marshes, and the basin became a brackish, fetid swamp.
Only after centuries have the southern lands become remotely livable while the northern lands are a wasteland populated by desperate criminals and aberrant beasts.
