The Order of Salt
"By salt and storm", these are the watchwords of the most fervent and devout followers of the Goddess Meeryln. Their mantra a reminder of their oaths and their duties. The Order of Salt ranks among the oldest of the Holy Orders of the New Gods, founded admist the earliest and darkest days of the Priestfall. The order claims to have been founded by St. Kreya, herself a convert of St. Wren the Stormrider, the First Called of Meeryln. According to the Legends of the First Saints, St. Kreya was once Jalinessa, a feared Pirate Lord whom raided the shores of the Eastern Tenembric Sea. She was present for the raid of Illanthane, where St. Wren first led her people to hide beneath the waves. It is said Jalinessa and St. Wren spoke to one another from beneath the waves. St. Wren prophecized to her the fall of the Old Gods and the
Public Agenda
The Chief Agenda of the Order of Salt is the eradication of piracy along the seas of Tenembria, and the protection of those who trade by sea. They contribute significant assets to the Inquisition's War Fleets and maintain their own force of warrior-monks and clerics that are utterly devoted to the cause of destroying piracy.
In addition to these goals, the Order of Salt is also the sole organization which concerns itself with the rescue of stranded or shipwrecked sailors, aiding the victims of piracy, and providing evacuations for smaller communities in the path of devastating storms.
Assets
The Order of Salt is an ascetic order devoted to the worship of Meeryln, despite their asceticism, they have not inconsiderable assets as a group. Beginning with several large fortress-monasteries dotted along the coasts of the Eastern Realms and notably several located along the Devil's Sea and Coast of Storms.
These monasteries serve double-duty as both hermitages and strongpoints in the Holy Order's crusade against piracy. Though the Order operates a small perfunctory fleet of ships, these tend to be used for supply and rescue missions and are poorly equipped to fight pirates. Saltmen typically instead lend their services as War Clerics, and Warrior Monks to other pirate-hunters.
History
The Order of Salt is one of the first notable Holy Orders to have developed during the Early Arumsreign Era when piracy was still a significant issue to the Nascent Empire, the Order was Founded by Saint Kreia of Aurolin. After the city itself had been sacked by Drenarim Pirates.
