Redwyn

"The sight of the red-walled city cresting on the horizon was met with sighs of relief and cries of joy among the rivermen in my company. The long journey up the Mervine had been especially tough, the wind had been against them nearly the entire time, and the men had to row against the current for several days. But now the city, and the promised riches of their cargo now lay only a few hours ahead of them. For myself I was eager to begin my travels of the Hraldan Valley, and bright and noble city of Redwyn seemed a most appropriate place to start."   The City of Redwyn is the most populous of all the cities of the Hraldan Valley and among the wealthiest. It rests on a prime location at the edge of Lake Hralda at it's outflow into the Mervine River giving the city access to nearly all of the trade moving in and out of the valley.   The city has long been known for it's distinctive high red walls, deliberately stained as such during its construction many centuries ago, and for being the locus of trade with the rest of Saxalia. This flourishing trade has brought incredible prosperity to the citizens of Redwyn, though it's burgeoning size has not come without cost in terms of overcrowding, crime, and intrigues.

Redwyn is predominantly a human city with a diverse and cosmopolitan population of races that have settled within the city due to the bustling river trade, and the central location of Redwyn to the valley. The majority of the humans are of Hraldan descent, albeit that Saxalians in general have long been heavily intermixed, other major populations include those of the Kumari and Itorri, both a long-standing native population and a sizeable number of transient traders, rivermen, and diplomats. The city has a large Dowelin minority concentrated in the Little Baninbail district, an area of the city constructed with smaller buildings in the native fashion of the littlefolk race but they are found throughout the city and nearby country-side, holding heavy interests in the agricultural and brewery industries. Redwyn is home to the largest Zookish enclave in the Hraldan, much of whom live and work near to their littlefolk neighbours in Little Baninbail due to having accommodations for their sizes. The Zookish Quarter though is also fitted with an ingenious heating system that keeps their district snow-free even in the dead of winter, a necessity as gnomes native to the southern deserts are notoriously prone frostbite and chill.   The city is also home to large numbers of dwarves, elves, and half-elves, most of whom are integrated into the broader human population, but two districts The Undercroft and Tel Irah, are centres of local culture for Dwarves and Elves respectively.

Government

The city of Redwyn is governed as a Free City within the domain of the Kingdom of Saxalia, it's citizens while subject to the Saxalian Crown, are first citizens of the city of Redwyn and are free from direct taxation or obligations of fealty. Instead the city pays together an annual tribute to the crown collected usually by tariffs and excises on the trade moving through the city.   The City Government is elected in a manner very similar to the Hydrean League's guild system, with the major guilds each providing or endorsing a candidate, over which all official citizens of the city votes. The five candidates with the most votes are elected to the city small council, and from among them choose a single leader called the Lord-Mayor.   Redwyn is considered the capital of Saxalia, and the Kings and Queens of Saxalia hold a public court within the City Palace at least twice a year. However, they do not usually reside within the city itself. Instead preferring their more spacious and luxiarant home known as The Redwine Hall is located some hours ride outside of the city.   The city's law and order is maintained by hired mercenaries, most recently the Orenzian company Frattia dia Alphonos, the Brothers of Alphonse or "Fonzini" as they are referred to affectionately, whose reputation for clean-dealing and loyalty allowed them to usurped the long-standing contract held by the Golden Scales. The new company has wasted little time in establishing themselves as a righteous alternative to their old rivals, but many grumble over their excessive zeal.   The Church operates most charitable organizations in the city; schools, temples, hospitals and poor houses in Redwyn, the effective leader of the faith in Redwyn is the Ecclessiarch of Selmaater Father Alann Forbriar. Although the High Priestesses of the temples of Meeryln and Saphren each hold significant sway in the city as well. The Inquisition maintains an official presence from within the Cathedral of St. Torhein, but beyond the officers of the Inquisition, all Church Militants are formally housed at the Monastery of St. Denica a short walk from the city's South Gate.

Defences

The City has robust defenses, in particular it's distinctive red walls and the well-stocked Wynegard Palace provides a further inner ring of security and mustering point for the city's militias and mercenary companies. The Brothers of Alphonse (Fonzini) have wasted little time in demonstrating their effectiveness by further upgrading the Riverport and Gate Houses with state-of-the-art Orenzian ballistae and scorpions. Their guild mages have also made a show of their increased anti-magical security.

Industry & Trade

Redwyn is dominated by the river trade flowing through the city, it is from here that almost all goods coming from outside of the Hraldan flow into, and almost all of the goods of the Hraldan flow out of, which has led to immeasurable wealth for the River Lords of Redwyn and even a great many smaller river companies have found their own way to stay afloat amid the dense trade flowing through the city.   Redwyn's name derives from the city's dealing in the fine Saxalian Red Wines, originally having been called the Port of Red Wine, and then Redwine, and now Redwyn. Saxalian Wine is typically considered the best in all of Tenembria and fetches luxuriant prices from Telmarin to Norostia, and even apparently being a clamoured for good in the Faraways across the Taliran Ocean.

Infrastructure

The Port of Redwyn is the terminal of the upriver barges and as such has a sizeable dockyard catered to the riverboat trade, the Mervine river serves an enormous volume of trade in and out of the Hraldan, and almost all ships which travel down it will take port in Redwyn to resupply and trade their goods. A ferry service offers multiple trips daily to ports in Bervund and Selmarn   The city has a functional but aging sewer and cistern network inherited all the way back from the First Empire, which has not grown with the city but still keeps the streets relatively clean of muck and grime. The roads are again Imperial-built but these have seen more extensive repairs and maintenance in their history, and nearly the entirety of the city has either paved or cobblestone roads.

Guilds and Factions

The most significant power struggle in Redwyn is between those who support the changes of the Brothers of Alphonse over those who preferred the more lax attitudes of the Golden Scales. Since the Scales still maintain a presence in the city from their own guildhall this has led to occasional bouts of violence.

History

Redwyn began it's history as a relatively small colonial outpost of the First Empire, at that point it traded mostly with the original Hraldan people for their red wine. As it grew to become a major exporter of this wine, the riverport was expanded by the Empire, and with the expansion came increased flow of trade from the south and north. Soon after the city exploded in population. At one point as many as 50,000 people lived in Redwyn, then called Port of Redwine. It served as a major staging ground for the Empire's operations in the Hraldan and capital of the Imperial Hraldan Province. It was at this time that many of the prominent temples to the Gods were created most notably the Cathedral of St. Torhein dedicated foremost to Selmaater.   Then came the collapse, the Arumsfall struck Redwyn hard, the collapse of trade instantly created mass poverty and the subsequent invasion of the Daemonic Host under Azagog the Red into the Hraldan saw the city besieged and overrun in a matter of months. The city lay empty save for a small garrison of demons for some five years, before the Great Crusade finally liberated it in _______. Led by St. _______. Having slew Azagog and routed most of the Daemons from the valley.   Though many survivors returned to the city in the ensuing years, the instability of the Hraldan region compounded the issues facing Redwyn. The city was twice sacked by invading tribesmen, although both times failing to capture the Wynegard Palace.

Architecture

Most of Redwyn is a mix of late Imperial and Hraldani architecture with many buildings have a mix of stucco'd stone foundations and wooded daub walls. Some newer buildings have come to reflect the popular Sierrican style common in Itorii cities,

Geography

The original old town of Redwyn including Wynegard Palace and the Basillica of St. Torhein is located on a small ridge overlooking the Mervine River, at its furthest extent the old Imperial city stretched further out into what is now the countryside, but the current Redwyn walls are much more compact and surround most of the city proper including the extensive dockyards.

Natural Resources

Any valuable minerals in the ridge were mined out during the construction of the sewers, but the surrounding country-side and nearby kingswoods are healthy and fertile giving the city a steady supply of food and timber.
