Eternal Library

The Eternal Library is considered the peak of magical and scientific knowledge of the Known World. The organization shares its name with the structure that serves as the center of Cogys' academic and political headquarters in southwest Novad.

Structure

The Eternal Library prioritizes knowledge above all else, selecting their leaders by the wealth of their knowledge or their contributions to a field of study. This often leads to some debate as to which fields of study take precedence. As a result, leading figures in the Eternal Library are gifted Veil-Sight Device with those higher in the organization possessing the more function ones. It is uncommon, but not impossible for individuals not hand-picked by the Eternal Library's leadership to rise up through the ranks. For those without the desire, inclination, or patience to gain enough knowledge to contend for a high position are better off recovering a Veil-Sight Device from within ruins of the old world, warranting a new position be opened within the organization in accordance with the functionality of the device.

Culture

Built upon the accumulation and distribution of knowledge, the Eternal Library boasts a population with a higher education that any other known nation or organization. Technology revived or reverse engineered from relics of the past are common-place to the extent that struggles faced by most other populations are significantly minimized.

Public Agenda

The Eternal Library's mission is to elevate the minds, enrich the lives, and expand the potential of the inheritors of the new world. Their academic and scholarly resources are unmatched in this new age and all that are able are welcome to learn from their greatest minds. This allows for the gifted to rise through the ranks and become active contributors in the advancement of the arts, Magic, and science. While some may argue that their standards of excellence are in excess and that there are some topics with which they are not as charitable, its leaders ensure that only the brightest and most noble are worthy of the deeper secrets of the world. Those with such knowledge could wield it to terrible effect, so great care must be taken in ensuring those that would use it for harm are kept in ignorance.

Assets

The Eternal Library has access to a body of knowledge that far exceeds the vast majority of organizations in the Known World. The greatest minds of the modern age push the limits of understanding and bring back to life many technologies of the old world. This gives them a significant advantage over the other nations of the Consortium and, in many ways, over the forces of nature itself.

History

There is some debate as to when the achieve beneath Sfera was first discovered, but the official discovery and founding year of the Eternal Library is 180 i the Age of Reclamation. The exact contents of this well-preserved vault has never been revealed in full, but the leaps in knowledge displayed by its discoverers suggest that it contains many secrets of the Age of Ascension as well as the first Veil-Sight Devices, solidifying their place as the founders of a new age of discovery. It didn't take long for the brightest minds of the land to gravitate to the civilization making a home in ruins that had fared the First Firefall, the War of Ashes, and the Age of Ice better than most. With the access to knowledge others had spent lifetimes accruing and devices that allow them to see the unseen elements of the world, the Eternal Library was able to rise above the forces of nature that kept the peoples of the rest of the world on the brink of extinction. They quicky expanded to reclaim the cities of Dode, Hexa, and Tetra, uniting them under the nation of Cogys in the year 220 of the Age of Reclamation, and were the first to set out across the Tryvyum Sea, leading to the discovery of the nations of Morydal and Ohedyn, and to the establishment of the new world's first multi-national alliance, the Tryvyum Trade Consortium

Demography and Population

The population of Cogys and, by extension, the Eternal Library, is one of the most diverse and integrated populations in the Known World. With information being the primary currency and status corresponding with knowledge, every has the opportunity to learn and establish a place for themselves within their society. Dryn tend to not rise as high in the ranks due to their shorter lifespans compared to Anthropes, but it is not uncommon for elderly and scholarly Dryn to hold notable positions within the organization.

Territories

Sfera serves as the capital of the Eternal Library with Dode, Hexa, and Tetra as its adjacent territories. They also maintain embassies in Morydal and Ohedyn as well as on Amyhra in addition to multiple military fortifications on Okanu.

Military

Due to the Eternal Library's magical and technological superiority, they don't have much need for a large military. Automated security systems make up most of their defenses while a small corps of highly-trained soldiers equipped with the advanced weaponry oversee those defense as well as conduct operations beyond their borders as necessary, including littoral operations using advanced Seafarers.

Religion

The Eternal Library does not condemn or condone religious beliefs and practices within Cogys or among its citizens. Having access to records that describe the world prior to the First Firefall has allowed them to understand that deities once played a very active role in the lives of Arokans in some parts of the world, but that they seemed to vanish during or just prior to the First Firefall. Significant scrutiny is applied to all modern religions and most are dismissed as unfounded, but there have been instances where some faiths have been given some validity based on mysterious phenomena giving them some credence, though none of these phenomena have been confirmed to be the works of gods.

Foreign Relations

Though the Eternal Library of Cogys is technically an equal member of the Consortium with the Braided Tribes of Morydal and the Fountain of Purity of Ohedyn, it is common knowledge that their magical and scientific superiority gives them a significant advantage over the others. Thus far, this dynamic has been to the benefit of all, but there are many that fear this imbalance of knowledge, Magic, and technology will lead to conflict. These sentiments have become all the more prevalent after the banning of Magic on Okanu following the Mageblast at the Arcane Laboratory in the 450th year of the Age of Reclamation.

Agriculture & Industry

Most processes, such as food production and common goods manufacturing have been at least partially automated, utilizing Magic and recovered technology to both increase its yield and reduce the cost of production. This has allowed Cogys to thrive beyond what all other nations of the Known World can achieve. Additionally, this has given the majority of its population the opportunity to focus on furthering their knowledge and propelling the study of Magic and science further.

Trade & Transport

The Eternal Library established the Tryvyum Trade Consortium to facilitate trade between the three nations of the Tryvyum Sea. While Cogys maintains primary control of most of the more advanced technologies, they use their lesser inventions to trade for precious gems and metals from Morydal and rare fauna and flora specimens from Ohedyn, utilizing both to further their magical and scientific advancements.

Currency

While the Cog is utilized for the exchange of goods and materials with the other nations of the Consortium and with adventurers and traders not native to Cogys, information is the primary currency of the mid and upper echelons of the Eternal Library. The value of knowledge fluctuates depending on what fields of study are advancing or stagnating, but anything already considered common knowledge is essentially worthless.

Major Imports

In addition to the trade conducted through the Tryvyum Trade Consortium, the Eternal Library has an official adventuring guild called the Revelation, that utilize some of the most advanced technology the Eternal Library has produced to delve into the ruins of the old world and recover ancient artifacts and secrets. These elite adventurers are some of the only individuals equipped with Veil-Sight devices that do not hold a formal position within the government and, in many cases, do not possess the level of education or knowledge necessary to be award such a device were they not a part of the Revelation. This lack of traditionally valued knowledge is compensated by their adventuring, Combat, and exploration expertise. Many of their members also often boast significant magical proficiencies. For those that do not wish to climb the academic and political ladders of Cogys, becoming a member of the Revelation is considered the highest level of achievement.

Legislative Body
The academic elite disseminate rules throughout Cogys and often make recommendations to the Consortium and partner nations, leveraging their exclusive access to the secrets of the old world. In most cases, their rulings prove beneficial and improve lives throughout the Known World. Such examples of this include the widespread used of the Coil, the utility of the Seafarers, and the ingenuity of Rushfall Facility.
