Yhmpir

“I sought endless beauty in a world of blood and tears. The brilliance among shadows of madness and guile. To what do I find but a rain of sorrow and pain, staining my crimson velvet. Drenching my ashen wings. This world will shun my choices and never shall I be sung of in the legends of heroes. Yet I carry on. Not for glory. Not for fame. I am Yhmpir, born of dusk and dawn. I fight for purity and I fight for legacy. I fight for the Long Night, to cover us in its cold embrace. Though my people see me as a tyrant, I still bleed for them to the bitter end.   In the name of my father - saint Luciano, I am but a handcrafted angel. Here to lead the way out of the blinding light, into the sacred night.”

Origin

Yhmpir are not born. They are made. When a mortal comes in contact with the Y-Serum - a rare substance which is directly injected through their spine and into their neural cortex. This mutagen directly infects the brain. Rewiring it, rebuilding it, expanding the nerves until the entire body starts transforming into something infernally divine.   They are bio-engineered transhumans. One third mortal. One third vampire. One third of angelic bloodline.   Beings created by the devious mind of Mayor Gunther Kueglemann and taught the philosophy and reasons to be by Dominus-Praetorius Luciano Penumbra. The fallen high-baron’s closest men and women which he cherishes like children. His knights of the holy and the defiled.   Transhumans of grace and savagery that weep tears of blood as they fight. Bringing swift and clean ends to the Golden Empire’s legionaries that seek to wrest back the lands of Penumbra underneath their control - yet oathsworn defenders of their father-saint, to bring a black and light blade to all vampires, all abyssal spawn and all hellish hordes that would threaten their people. Both within and beyond their cursed borders.

Appearance

Yhmpir look humanoid at first glance, yet they are impossibly symmetrical in design. With high cheekbones, unnaturally perfect and evenly distributed muscularity and thick glossy hair. These are their humanoid features, altered by the divine lineage artificially coursing through their blood.   The ashen black wings, piercing crimson eyes and almost clawlike nails are part of the vampiric heritage to which they have been induced.   As a side effect from the Y-Serum aggressively transforming their bodies, around half of the Yhmpir have porcelain pale skin from a benign case of albinism. Turning their hair snow white, while the wings still remain black.

Movement

When an Yhmpir moves, it is less of a gait and more of a form of stance and dance. Their moves are fluid as if they just float above the ground. Leaving only the faintest traces of sound from their steps as they move at catlike speed with batlike instincts for eye to body coordination.   These are creatures that can dodge and parry bullets and effectively coordinate themselves to outmaneuver and outpace mortal foes even when encircled and surrounded.   Their most uncanny motions remain in how they can actively use their wings to fly short distances and glide while standing up. Practically making them invulnerable to falls. These wings can also be pressed back into their bodies, behind their shoulderblades - when they are fighting.

Powers

While the Yhmpir are undoubtedly extremely powerful - their perfections come at a cost. Even with a halo glowing behind their head, there is nothing harmonious about them. This object that shifts in colour and aura of the stance they invoke is not some angelic biological organ, but a magitech foci.   Their body and mind may be tempered to withstand an incredible amount of arcane withdrawal and a near infinite pool of mana, but it does not help their case when the forces they seek to master counter-act each other.

Solar Shift

The Yhmpir, unable to cast devastating solar spells like the Holy Imperator can, or even an adept priest of Ysand for that matter - instead allows themselves to be embraced by the sun. Divine and Vampiric heritage clashing violently as their eyes light up like two burning orbs. Their wings burst flames like an ignited phoenix and their claws coarse with smoldering force.   Drawing from their own warmth and that of the area around them - the halo turns oxygen into power that allows the Yhmpir to whirl through a throng of forces and carve at them with a molten blade. Making it hard to breathe and even stand close to them, without feeling uncomfortable due to the heat. This is their stance for combating vampires and when surrounded by crowds of foes.   The downside to the Solar Shift is the Yhmpir’s resistances to cold are rendered into weaknesses which water, frost and void magics can capitalize on.

Purpose

As willing subjects that embrace Luciano’s gifts - the Yhmpir still has two rather than a singular purpose. For Luciano, the Yhmpir are his beloved children. His masterpieces and his prototypes of the perfect human. An evolved race that shall safeguard humanity and bring it into the next era.   For Kueglemann, they are a fever dream of creating a world in which everything is the same. No rulers, no dynasties and no governments. Where everyone is omnipotent and casting aside the entities he considers false divinities. Everything shall be equal in stagnant perfection.   For the Yhmpir themselves - they do not fully understand what they are. A hundred, split evenly among men and women that carry on their blind crusade in the name of Penumbra. Too innocent to understand the consequences of the dualities they bleed and serve.   They are experiments, made in three generations.   The first which came out emotionally stunted and apathetic to all but the strongest emotions. Thirty five reside within Castello di Penumbra as artists, scholars and bio-engineered prototypes for the future culture shapers.   Another thirty five belong to the second generation. Their emotions perfected at the cost of introspection and patience. Now hungry to feel and to act, they are the unseen infiltrators from the Bloodsun’s Children.   Lastly, the third generation exists as the final refinement on the Yhmpir’s genetical code. Emotion stabilized with patience. Perfect control of their body parts. Able to hold several thoughts at the same time. Some of the thirty deadliest warriors the world has ever seen.   Yet a fourth generation secretly exists, as over the years. At least a dozen Yhmpir have been killed in action by the Golden Empire, Diestria and Vampiric forces. Each loss, a crack at the fragile peace upon Luciano’s mind.

Abyssal Shift

As a direct paradox to their sunbursting state, the Yhmpir can enter an abyssal shift which renders their eyes dark and liquid like ink. Here, their wings fall around them like a cloak of smoke and they move like an erratic shadow. This is shadow and illusion magic at its basics - but their dark state has another important effect.   Rather than enhancing their combat abilities, they hijack psychic energy from the abyssal idols to ravage foes and obstacles with psionic spells. This allows them to easily manipulate an individual, or even a battlefield - serving as a brilliant stealth shift to terrorize enemy ranks before making their presence known.   While this shift bolsters their mental fortitude from the abyssal forces, the woven shadows around them leave the Yhmpir vulnerable to fire, light and holy magics.

Sanguine Shift

The Yhmpir fully embraces their vampiric side. Bleeding sanguine tears as their skin thickens and their claws protrude. In this state, the senses of the creature become animalistic with the scent of a bloodhound, sight like an eagle and ears like a bat. While this stance does little to aid their magical flaws - increased strength and speed still makes it a perfect shift to hunt and take down singular monstrous targets.   The Sanguine Shift does have one more vital boon to it. While they still remain immune burning beneath the sun - they inherit the strengths of vampiric immunity. Making them immortal and slowly regenerating all wounds apart from being burnt, staked through the heart or decapitated.   This serves the Yhmpir as a last stand state, as its only weakness is how it is also the least efficient stance in both war and social situations.

Sacramental Shift

Two wings split into four, as a golden light radiates from the Yhmpir’s halo. Sacred forces shine bright to ease the pain of those around the creature. Healing the wounds of their allies and mortal foes as well - while burning the skin of demons and abominable monsters.   An Yhmpir that embraces the sacramental shift, is likely not one which is directly engaging in combat. The stance serves to actively heal and save the lives of those around the being, closing wounds and bolstering their abilities. Like that of a Signifer but fourfold less the potency as bottlenecked by vampiric blood screaming for suffering, not succor.   During the Sacramental Shift, an Yhmpir is weakest as it is heavily focused on keeping their allies alive. They are susceptible both to dark arts, or a well placed bullet.
