Have fun in the Sun! See you at #Summer Camp! #SC25!

I had some difficulty maintaining my extra Goals, moreso due to work-related shifts. I'll certainly be reading more in August, while there's many fresh, new Articles circulating about. I'm happy to have the opportunities to discover and explore what the World Anvil Community created during our fair challenge. It was fun, wasn't it?

"Let's see what's cooking..."

This month, we have an all-new version of a trending section, the "Tales of Ages", featuring each Summer Camp Article. We also have a neat edition to the "Feature Presentation"; a reading list of my favorite community Articles from the prompts. Links for Articles provided also. There's plenty more in store! Please enjoy!

Editor's Response

Thank you both for brilliant questions; I certainly enjoy delving the details surrounding design for games and writing for Worlds. With this in mind, I also like to remind my friend, the Reader, that you're always welcome to share your thoughts below. I'm no expert, so there is value in sharing perspectives.

Over Summer Camp, I had the opportunity to refine my creative process. I was able to uncover a vital "Flow" that works for me. I'm also blessed in that I'm in a process of discovering and defining what that Flow is and that it isn't being defined for me. I mention this to say, find what feels comfortable for you, and then improve on that gradually.

There are two words that also describe my process: evolving and innovating. This is true for many of the Writers that I've met through this experience. I've been through seasons now, watching my own work metamorphose, as I learn and become inspire by more. It's one of the reasons I like to say it's a WIP and isn't complete yet: I'm still being inspired and moved by Life. Arc Sagas explores these kinds of relationships between what was and what could be, so I suspect it's shape will continue to shift until it finds the right flow and form.
As it relates to systems that the Game-Master (GM) uses to communicate between the mechanics of the game and the Player Characters (PC), I think I prefer a system that grants tools to both, with hard definitions of play that mimic Life. It's what attracted me to games like DnD or MTG to begin with. But, I'd like to expand on this to say, I like systems that place the GM in a seat of playing the Game, challenging their use of the story-telling devices.
This can be done by providing Random elements, such as Encounter Tables, or through providing articulate source material. When it comes to the Rules of a good TTRPG, I like it to feel more like a gathering of friends than rules arbitration, and I think that can be achieved with a careful balance of the system. It's also easier when each person knows how it plays, so having clear, concise Rules and references,(such as World Anvil), helps.

Systems should communicate their Rules in an accessible way, creating a Meta-World that each PC and GM can explore at the table. A consistent approach communicates well and there are elements of design that can make this easy for everyone. I think that's why so many franchises find success in having familiarity throughout their many incarnations, besides the nostalgia.
As it relates to Arc Sagas, my approach to building this system has been trial and error, but each innovation brings us forward. My hope is to provide a system that allows PCs and GMs to explore new and fun alternatives to traditional Game-Play. Basing it on familiar concepts helps ground an overall Meta of RPG systems, integrating new ideas with good tools.

A little longer than usual. I hope it provides an answer to your Inquires, thank you!

Last year, I received the Copper Badge for participating in Summer Camp: 24'! This year, I earned Copper as a Goal.

There was a difference accepting it as a prize rather than a compromise. I struggled with the quality of my work in 24' but not this Time. Each Article had it's own little innovations, which will be inspiring further work and revisions. For the 8th Article, you'll need to visit a different setting, the town of Catengolm!

Feature Presentation!

In August, World Anvil asks Anvilites to participate in a Reading Challenge of the prior Summer Camp Articles! A qualified Reading Challenge consists of 10 Articles.

Simply, I like Reading. It's why I'm here. Writing. Arc Sagas has been inspired, through Reading. And Writing, of course. But mainly, Reading others' Work.
This Feature presents my Reading List- a total of 80 Articles, Weeks 1 & 2 of the Challenge. The Goal? 160 Articles of some of that sweet Summer Heat!

Sections include 1 Feature and 3 Honorable Mentions from each Prompt!
To make the Reading Challenge deadline, Weeks 3 & 4 will be announced as part of the next Arc Tribune v10: Milestone One!
Seasonal Reads will become a new edition to the Community series of Articles. It'll be a quarterly Reading List, featuring our World Anvil Community! My hopes are you'll find several new Articles to enjoy, as I have. Experience new Worlds- today!

I'll admit, I was ambitious with this. Later editions of Seasonal Reads probably won't be as dense. The purpose is distribution and journalism- to provide access to names and titles from all over the Anvil-verse. I hope some will be familiar- some will be new- but that you'll have Time for a review! As an opinion piece, it's a collection of my favorites!

Breaking News!

Part 2/2: Bad Words!

"Can he say that on WAIV?"

"A nearby bush shakes; a beast emerges! "Oh, mercy, Larcs, did you get that? Viewers, we have what appears to be... a baby rabbit? Eh, cut the feed, Larcs. I thought for sure we'd get something better, like oh, I don't know, a Giant Lizard or Wild Cat. Baby rabbit..."

"That would be my luck," Marlen vents,
complaining elsewhere, off-screen. Shot pans to rabbit, nibbling a strange mushroom. Then, it rears up and speaks, "Return. Reject." A low droning. The camera falls, planted in the grass, as the rabbit scurries away. Marlen returns. "Oh, and another thing..." Marlen looks around, confused. Picks up the camera. "You're kidding me? Another camera man? I'll never get this story at this rate! Well, f---". Static. Transmission ends.
Will Marlen Strale keep his job? Find out next month in another Breaking News bulletin!

Under the Hood

This month's Under the Hood features base changes to the initial Arx-Core D20 System. This short segment describes an important shift in the scope of Arc Sagas. Click below!
This is a rerun of last month's edition of Under the Hood. TTRPG WIP has paused as I'm working on the Reading Challenge. In the meantime, catch up on some significant changes in the system!

Arx-Core D10's System

What is changing in Arc Sagas?

At its heart, the Arx-Core D10's System is still a D20 system. Now, the base system will use Dice Pools- D10's to be specific- to determine rates of Success. This will allow more variation in roll chance, granting GM's and Player's more narrative control of their outcomes. Initially, this project was designed to be a D20 system, but as I innovate and learn more about design and what I can achieve, I found that this could be an exciting way to create something familiar but also unique. This is a fluid project; as such, what's established today could be innovated tomorrow. That's Arc Sagas, baby.

What could that look like?

v01.02: Arx-Core D10's System features D10 Pools when determining a Player's Success Rates- be that in or out of Combat. These are connected to the Base Attributes.

A GM sets a Difficulty Value based on potential Success or Failure. Players rolls a number of D10's related to their Attribute Score and related Modifier. An Advantage system may increase the Success Rate or reward Automatic Successes. There are multiple ways to modify outcomes. Sometimes, rolls might not be required!

Players enhance their odds of Success by choosing Talents and Proficiencies and increasing their Attribute's Maximum Rank.
Base Attribute/ Modifier:
Power: 5 / +2.
Governs Dice Pool and numeric values.

Difficulty Value
Written as:
(Attribute/ Proficiency): DV/ +
# of Successes (Success Rate)

Example:
Push a heavy object. (Power): 6/+2
  • Check that Modifier is > Success Rate. Can't attempt if < than Success Rate.
  • Modifications on rolls are applied in this step, such as Advantage.
  • Roll XD10, where X is Power Modifier.
    In this example, roll 2d10.
  • Each Roll above 6 is a Success.
    This Action requires 2 Successes.
