Ulago Groyarak
Master-at-Arms
Ulago only has the foggiest memories of his mother and father, but his first concrete memories are of his big sister, Urath. Ulago spent much of his childhood in a tavern, helping to wash tankards and clean up after guests while waiting for Urath to come back. Sometime after that, he spent a lot of time hiding, still waiting for Urath. She was a hard worker and took care of him all his life, and though she was only seven years older, he knew he wanted to be just like her when he grew up.
When Ulago was three, his sister moved them across the water to Homesteading. He liked Homesteading a lot better, and when he got even older, he even found other people his age and size to play with. They were a strange people, called “children” by some, “kids” by others. His days were no longer spent hiding, but instead spent playing with these people, though he never strayed far from where Urath told him to wait. The second best thing about Homesteading was the fact that the two sometimes got to sleep in beds. They were a luxury though, and could only come when Urath had a lot of money. Though he wanted to help pay for beds and toys, Urath refused to let him work, and insisted he go play with the others instead.
But everything changed when Ulago was seven. Up until then, he only ever wondered about the massive ships that came in and out of the Homesteading docks, and all he knew came when he listened to what the sailors said. But when he was seven, Urath found a ship that was looking for more deckhands. Best of all, food and beds were provided! He could sleep in a bed every night! He urged his sister to take the job, and she did, but said they would have to work to earn their keep. Ulago went right to work, following the captain and taking good care of him, and doing anything that needed to get done so that he and Urath could stay. The food may not have been as good as what they ate at the taverns some nights, but it was still a welcome change from raw cabbage and stale bread they ate most of the time. Ulago loved sailing, and never wanted to leave the lifestyle behind.
The day the captain retired and the crew disbanded was hard for Ulago. All the people he had come to know just stopped spending time together one day, and once again, he only had Urath. He pleaded with her to find another ship, but she told him it was unlikely they would find one as good as theirs. But then one day, when he was fifteen, Urath told him about another opportunity on a new sailing ship. He couldn’t have been more excited! However, it was very different from the first one. People here weren’t as warm and inviting, and they said words that Urath had, once upon a time, told him to never say. But he was old enough to say those words now, which he enjoyed.
At this point in his life, Ulago was becoming destructive. It is natural for teens to be angry, and he often channeled this for small jobs like chopping firewood or hammering nails for nearby construction jobs. But the captain here, Captain Tobe Namedlater, encouraged it, and introduced him to new tools of destruction and how to use them. With Urath’s blessing, he quickly learned, and in due time, became the Master-at-Arms aboard the ship. He was proud, and Urath said she was proud as well. Finally, he could provide for his big sister, and one day when their sailing days were over, he could take care of her and let her rest for once.
Ulago’s job is to maintain the ship’s weapons and organize their deckhands into a militia when the need arises. He can be a bit short-fused, but generally means well. He is fiercely loyal to Captain Tobe Namedlater for this lifestyle he gifted the two. Although, it should be noted, he is loyal to Urath first and foremost; she may be his half-sister, but she’s his whole family.
On the night of the mutiny, Ulago was ready to quash the puny uprising until he learned that Urath was ready to revolt. He had a choice between Captain Tobe Namedlater and his sister. And, well, it wasn't a tough choice to make.
His current whereabouts are unknown.
