Security Classification: Level 1: Public Access

Introductory Overview: The Vhenari are a highly diverse Sophic species comprised of numerous subspecies of mammalian anthropomorphs, commonly referred to as "kin" or "folk" (e.g., Wolfkin, Bear-folk). Exhibiting a vast range of physical forms that correspond to various mammal types—from rodents to ursines—they are unified by their shared bipedal structure, human-level sapience, and a common (though unproven) origin theory suggesting a magical evolution from non-sapient animal ancestors by a now-lost species. Despite their animalistic features, which include fur, snouts, claws, or hooves, Vhenari possess complex social structures and are biologically capable of interbreeding with several other humanoid Sophic species, resulting in offspring known as "Beast-Blooded."

//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on the Vhenari, formerly known as 'Primals'. //>_ So, the Vhenari. Don't call 'em 'Primals' to their face unless you want trouble; that's a slur now. These are your 'animal-people' – bears, wolves, rats, you name it, if it's a mammal, there's probably a Vhenari version walking around on two legs. The big mystery is where they came from; the popular story is some ancient power went around zapping animals with magic until they got smart. They're just as intelligent as any human, but their instincts often match their animal side, which leads to a lot of ugly stereotypes from folks who don't get it. They're a whole mess of different peoples rolled into one big, furry, often-misunderstood species.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Vhenari anatomy is exceptionally diverse, with morphology varying significantly between subspecies to reflect their corresponding animal counterparts. Stature ranges widely from approximately 4.5 feet for smaller subspecies (e.g., rodent kin) to over 8 feet for larger types (e.g., ursine kin), with rare instances exceeding 9 feet. Common morphological traits include pronounced snouts, furred integument (with exceptions such as elephant or rhino kin), and extremities that mirror their animal origins (e.g., paw pads, claws, hooves). Cranial features such as horns, antlers, or mandibular tusks are present where biologically analogous. Notably, no primate-based Vhenari morphotypes are documented.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on Vhenari builds. //>_ Vhenari body types are all over the place. You've got everything from four-and-a-half-foot rat folk to eight-foot-plus bear people. Most are covered in fur and have the snout to match their animal half. Feet are usually paws or hooves. If the animal it's based on has horns or tusks, the Vhenari version probably does too. Funny enough, there are no monkey or ape Vhenari on record. Maybe that niche was already filled...

Genetics and Reproduction

Vhenari reproductive compatibility is subject to specific genetic parameters. Intra-species viability is typically restricted, with successful reproduction generally only possible between Vhenari of the same Clan or, in some cases, closely related Families with high physiological similarity. They are genetically incompatible with reptilian Sophic species such as the Dracose. Conversely, Vhenari are capable of producing viable offspring with numerous humanoid species, including Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Ceangar, and Orcs. These inter-species progeny are known as "Beast-Blooded" and predominantly exhibit the phenotype of their non-Vhenari parent, but with distinct vestigial traits from their Vhenari lineage, such as animalistic ears, claws, horns, fangs, or patches of fur.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on Vhenari family trees (they get complicated). //>_ Vhenari baby-making has weird rules. A Wolf-kin and a Bear-kin can't have kids together; they gotta stick to their own Clan or very similar Families. No weird bear-wolf hybrids. No Vhenari-Dracose lizard-mammals either, thank the stars. But here's the kicker: they *can* have kids with Humans, Elves, Dwarves... basically any of the more 'standard' humanoid models. The resulting kids are called 'Beast-Blooded' – they mostly look like their non-Vhenari parent but with some cool animal hand-me-downs like claws, antlers, or fuzzy arms.

Growth Rate & Stages

The average Vhenari lifespan and overall rate of maturation to adulthood are directly comparable to those of Humans. While their developmental timeline aligns with a Human model, the manifestation and growth of their specific animalistic physical traits—such as the development of horns, antlers, tusks, or changes in fur density—typically follow a pattern analogous to their respective non-sapient animal counterparts, but scaled to this Human-like rate of reaching full maturity.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on Vhenari growing pains. //>_ Vhenari basically grow up on a human clock – same general lifespan, same timeline for hitting puberty and adulthood. The weird part is *how* their animal bits come in. A young Deer-kin, for example, will grow their antlers in stages, year by year, just like a real deer, but it's all timed to their human-like growth spurt. So, they mature like a person, but their unique features follow an animal's instruction manual.

Ecology and Habitats

Vhenari subspecies display a strong instinctual preference for establishing communities within ecological biomes that correspond to the natural habitats of their respective animal counterparts. For example, ursine kin are most frequently found in forests and mountains, while leonine kin favor savannas. However, due to individual agency and societal migration, Vhenari are highly adaptable; outlier individuals and communities can be found integrated into nearly any global environment, often far from their ancestral lands.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on where Vhenari hang their hats (or antlers). //>_ Vhenari zip codes are usually predictable. Bear-folk live in the woods, lion-kin on the plains, arctic fox-kin up north. They like places that feel like home to their animal half. But that's just a tendency, not a rule. You'll find outliers all over the place if you look – a polar bear Vhenari running a shop at the equator, a jungle cat Vhenari shivering up in the mountains. They get around.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Vhenari dietary requirements are highly specialized and vary significantly between subspecies, directly correlating with the biological needs of their respective animal counterparts. There is no single species-wide diet; for example, carnivorous subspecies such as those in the Canine Clan require a diet rich in animal protein to maintain their health, while herbivorous subspecies like Deer Kin necessitate a high intake of natural plant fiber. These distinct nutritional needs are a fundamental aspect of their subspecies differentiation.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on the Vhenari menu. //>_ What do Vhenari eat? Simple: what their animal half eats. A Wolfkin needs meat, a Deer-kin needs plants. You can't just feed 'em all the same stuff. Their biology dictates the menu. So, trying to get a Lion-folk to switch to a salad is a monumentally stupid idea that will probably get you eaten. They're true omnivores at the species level, but picky eaters at the subspecies level.

Behaviour

Vhenari psychology is a complex interplay between their human-level sapient intellect and deeply ingrained instinctual behaviors inherited from their respective animal counterparts. These innate tendencies significantly influence their social dynamics and individual temperaments. For example, Wolf Kin often exhibit strong pack-forming behaviors, Deer Kin may display heightened cautiousness or nervousness in conflict situations, Rodentia Clan members can be prone to resource hoarding, and Ursine Kin may experience periods of significant gluttony and lethargy. These instinct-driven behaviors, while natural to the Vhenari, are frequently misinterpreted by other species, leading to the formation of widespread negative stereotypes.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on Vhenari head-space. //>_ Vhenari are as smart as you or me, but their brains are still running on ancient animal software. The animal isn't just what they look like; it's how they think. Wolfkin need their pack. Deer-kin are naturally jumpy. Rat-folk have a 'what's yours is mine' attitude about shiny things and hoard stuff. Bear-kin love to eat a ton and then nap for a week. These aren't just choices; it's deep-wired instinct. 'Course, most folks don't see the nuance; they just slap on a lazy stereotype and call them all skittish, thieving, lazy brutes.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Vhenari society is typically organized into close-knit communities, often forming homogenous towns or villages. Their social identity is defined by a formal hierarchical classification system, categorizing individuals by broad Clan (e.g., Canine, Feline, Ursidae), which subdivides into specific Family groups (e.g., Wolf, Tiger, Bear), and further into specific Kin (e.g., Timber Wolf, Siberian Tiger, Grizzly Bear). While this structure provides a strong sense of identity, inter-group relations are often complex and fraught with conflict, ranging from intense rivalries (notably between the Canine and Feline Clans) to widespread stigmatization directed at certain groups, such as the Rodentia Clan.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on the Vhenari pecking order. //>_ Vhenari society is basically one big, complicated, and often dysfunctional family tree. Everyone's sorted into a Clan, like Feline or Canine, then a 'Family' within that, like Wolf or Lion. They tend to stick to their own towns. And get this: they don't all get along. At all. There's a classic 'cats vs. dogs' feud between the two biggest Clans, and pretty much everyone dumps on the Rodent-kin, calling them thieves and spies. So much for one big happy 'Beast-kin' family.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Vhenari sensory capabilities are highly specialized and diverse, directly correlating with the biological traits of their respective animal counterparts. There is no uniform sensory baseline for the species; rather, each subspecies inherits enhanced senses reflective of its origin animal. For example, members of the Canine Clan typically possess exceptionally acute olfactory senses, Feline Clan members exhibit superior nocturnal vision, and Vhenari of the Elephant Family are documented to have a remarkably powerful sense of hearing.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on what Vhenari see, hear, and smell. //>_ Vhenari senses are basically a grab-bag of animal superpowers. Whatever their base animal is best at, they get the deluxe version. Wolfkin can probably smell your lunch from three towns over. Cat-folk see perfectly in pitch-black darkness. Elephant-kin can likely hear a pin drop in the next time zone. It means every type has a specialty, making them natural trackers, lookouts, or spies, depending on what hardware they were born with.

Civilization and Culture

History

A significant period in Vhenari history occurred during the 6th Age, often referred to as the "Age of Chains," which saw the widespread enslavement of their species. This practice was extensive, notably across the Quevena continent, the Rhytheme and Elldol island continents, the western edge of the Corvain continent, and in scattered pockets throughout Kasis and the Crux island continent. The prevailing justification for this servitude was the Vhenari's non-humanoid appearance and their diverse, often localized, languages, which led certain societies to classify them as non-sapient peoples forced into labor for the "public good." Historical records indicate this movement was largely led by various Elven powers of the era and was met with both open and covert opposition from numerous Human factions. This widespread enslavement was ultimately brought to an end by a major conflict known as the War of Broken Sheers, which primarily took place in the regions surrounding the Ocean of Shattered Lands.
//>_ Hacker_Override_Initiated... Karckess on the dark chapter of Vhenari history. //>_ The Vhenari have a rough history, no way around it. Back in the 6th Age, also known as the 'Age of Chains' – which tells you everything – they were enslaved on a massive scale. The excuse? They looked like animals and spoke their own languages, so the 'more civilized' species, with the Elves leading the charge, decided they weren't 'people' and put 'em to work. A lot of Humans apparently had a problem with that and fought back, quietly or otherwise. The whole ugly chapter ended in a huge, bloody conflict called the War of Broken Sheers. Explains why Vhenari clans might not be too quick to trust outsiders.
