The Ni'Zar Waste

The Waste is home to many strange creatures and the people who rule it are strangest of all. This is the land of the Leonin.

Geography

The Ni'Zar Waste is a large area of land on the Southern Island of Ancaepya. It spans from the River Yvor to the west to the Isamid River in the East and from the ocean to the south to the Ni'Zar foothills of the Bluewall Peaks to the north. Most of it is dry grasslands- savanna, but an area in the center of the Waste is devoid of plant life altogether. That is the Ni'Zar Desert after which the whole waste is named.

History

For all of recorded history the Ni'Zar Waste has been home to the Leonin. When Elves first arrived on the southern island from their homeland in the northern one the Leonin were already living in the Waste. Of course it was not called the Waste back then, the name was given to it by Humans in a later era. Ni'Zar is the name the Leonin use for themselves.
The Elves and the Leonin had a relatively peaceful relationship and mostly ignored each other, but the Humans, as Humans are prone to do, tried to expand their territory into the Waste, which proved catastrophic for them as they were routinely beaten by the Leonin prides until the dragons arrived.
During the time of the dragons the Leonin were forcefully subjugated by a large blue dragon named Oldrir who ruled them with an iron fist. Unlike the other races on the continent, they never worshiped dragons and only served their master grudgingly, rejoicing when he left. The subjugation left a deep hatred of dragons rooted into the culture of the Leonin.
The Leonin prides still control the Waste, though the Kingdom of Ancaepya claims it as its own. They rarely venture out into the world, but when they do they are sought after as mercenaries and looked upon with awe, admiration and regrettably a little distrust.
