Two factions of magic struggle for supremacy; the Siojin and the Madgin.
What is magic?
Magic is elemental in nature. The four major arcanum are Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. The four minor arcanum are Wood, Realm, Metal, and Spirit. Realm and Spirit are the most difficult to tap into and most casters believe the connection to them to be a lost art. Most Madgin prefer to use Air, but can specialize in the others. Where does magic come from?
Magic comes from aether, the spiritual energy that inhabits all living things on An-Diadh. Who can do magic?
The talent for magic is rare, but it is found in both the Aerlan and Edan. Iman and Prytini casters discover their talents around the age of maturity. Those who gravitate to the Madgin harvest philosophy are sent to the Mage College in Osprey Basin City. Aerlan are so longed lived, no one know when they begin to cast. Since Aerlan are known to abhor the Madgin's harvest philosophy, they are exclusively Siojin. Draku and Scotia are not known to use magic. How does one perform magic?
The control and use of elemental magic comes through extensive study in the ways to manipulate aether while mitigating its great cost. Madgin Magic employs a harvest model. The Madgin harvest the energy for their spells by ingesting aether, in whole, from other creatures. It is their belief that the purest aether comes from sapient creatures who possess a strong will. If a Madgin's life-force capacity is full, they can store extra power in crystae gems that are embedded in their throats. Madgin use their gems to power clockworks, engines, and other mechanical devices.
