Two factions of magic struggle for supremacy; the Siojin Circles and the Madgin Corps.
Magic is elemental in nature. The four major arcanum are Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. The four minor arcanum are Wood, Realm, Metal, and Spirit. Realm and Spirit are the most difficult to tap into and most casters believe the connection to them to be a lost art. Most Siojin prefer to use Water, Earth and Fire from the Major Arcanum but there are rare casters who specialize in Wood and Metal. Siojin never use Air. Where does magic come from?
Magic comes from aether, the spiritual energy of An-Diadh. Certain areas of the land tend to produce more power than others. Who can do magic?
The talent for magic is rare, but it is found in both Aerlan and Edan. Iman and Prytini casters discover their talents around the age of maturity and are sent to the nearest Circle for training. Aerlan are so longed lived, no one know when they begin to cast. Aerlanni casters exclusively embrace the harness philosophy and train as Siojin.
How does one perform magic?
The use and control of elemental magic comes through extensive study and willingness to experience magic's great cost.
Siojin Magic employs a harness model. Magic comes from the ability to use aether, or life force, from surrounding non-sapient beings and from the magic-user's own life-force. Siojin swear to never use the life force of sapient, intelligent beings. Aether is not inexhaustible, so Siojin must rest or meditate to allow it to replenish. They believe this maintains balance in the world. They also believe in limitations - that by taking a little from all, none are harmed.
Siojin legend says the first Keepers defied the gods and taught magic to their followers. The first students were named Followers of the Silken Path and eventually Siojin. The first cardinal rule of all Siojin is imdagal or do no harm.
