Barony of Clos-Poulet
Structure
The Barony of Clos-Poulet, a vassal of the Kontelezh Aleth, is something of an outlier within the Duchy of Letha. While ostensibly a vassal of the Duchy under the control of the Baron of Clos-Poulet, the reality on the ground is much different. The Baron, while remaining influential in local politics, is a figurehead, the real policymaking falling to the Captain's Council of Aleth.
The Corsair's City, the largest settlement in Clos-Poulet, is home to hundreds of ships and crews from all across Alvez, with many being away on long voyages for much of the year. The upper classes of the city are a motley collection of sea captains, adventurer nobles and merchant guildmasters who have built their wealth on the waves, each with the own ships, and crews. The wealth and independent spirit of ship owners and sailors alike is generally not tied to their lands on the Peninsula, but rather their trade income and privateering. As a result, the Baron, granted authority over the marshy lands of Clos-Poulet, has limited influence over the often-rebellious city,
The Baron is granted a guaranteed seat as the head of the Captain's Council with a great deal of power, but not without limitations. A majority of votes can overrule their baronial decrees. Unlike its rival, Montroulez, Aleth is not considered a "free city" and is legally unable to raise an army or mint coins under its own authority. Instead it operates as part of an often divided collective of independent sea captains and wealthy shipowners.
Cellar Rats - A notable example of Ducal power within the region, the Ducal Customs officers, dubbed "Cellar Rats" by the local population, are in charge of maintaining trading fees and regulation, as well as rooting out smugglers.
Culture
Alethier Manors
An Alethier is a large manor, built by the wealthy traders and shipowners of the Corsair city. Built outside the walls of Aleth itself, these elegant stone field houses dot he countryside of Clos-Poulet. These stately homes are built around a small center with two adjoining wings extending the facade outwards.
History
The region was held by the Koriosolited Clan prior to the arrival of Conan Meriadoc, before being conquered by Gadeon, King of Dumnonia. The region was located on the fringes of the Kingdom of Great Kernev, but rebelled following the destruction of Nasado and Ys.
Territories
The Barony of Clos-Poulet is located in Northeast Letha on the Armorican Peninsula, on the Painted Channel, part of the Emerald Coast. The Barony is largely contiguous with a small peninsula situated between the Renk River and the Pleg-Mor Menez-Mikael. Its southern border, the Black Marsh of Coulban, is a peat bog and pond that is part of the larger Marais de Dol
Despite being a peninsula, only two overland routes provide access into the region, one a coastal road leading from Dol and Menez-Mikael, the other from the South over the Black Marsh of Coulban.
The Biskonti Daoudour is its Western neighbor, located across the Renk River, while its landward border to the Southeast is taken up entirely by the Biskonti Dol.
Trade & Transport
The region, especially the numerous coves and inlets along the Renk River, are a hotbed for smuggling, especially Edgegrass, which is commonly grown in the area, as well as salt.
