Midlands
Overview:
The Midlands is a vast and varied region of Chernaya, lying between Sevgorod in the south and the northern frontiers. Known for its scattered forests, open fields, and harsh winters, the Midlands serves as a critical buffer and link between Sevgorod, the "heart of Chernaya" and the more remote North. It is an area defined by its small, isolated settlements, treacherous roads, and a populace that ranges from communal to deeply paranoid.
Geography and Climate:
The Midlands is characterized by its mix of small forests and rocky fields, with roads that wind precariously between them. The region is prone to especially harsh winters, which further isolate its inhabitants and make travel difficult. The land is less fertile than the southern provinces like Waylan , but it supports hardy crops and livestock, contributing to the subsistence of its scattered communities.
Population and Settlements:
- No Major Cities: Unlike other regions of Chernaya, the Midlands lacks major urban centers. Its population is clustered near Sevgorod on one end and Rostova on the other, with numerous small towns and villages in between. These settlements are connected by winding, often treacherous roads, making travel and communication challenging.
- Diverse Communities: The people of the Midlands are as varied as the landscape, with some communities embracing a tight-knit, communal way of life, while others are more suspicious and insular. This diversity is a product of the region's isolation and the different waves of settlers and refugees that have passed through over the centuries.
