Karlu-Chatil
Overview:
The Karlu-Chatil, often derogatorily referred to as "goblins" or "half-bloods," are the offspring of unions between Feyn and humans. They are without known exception carried by a human mother. This hybrid lineage results in individuals who possess a blend of traits from both their human and Feyn ancestry. While some Karlu-Chatil can pass as fully human, others exhibit more pronounced Feyn characteristics, leading to their marginalization in both societies. Despite this, they play a unique role in the broader cycle of life and death, particularly in Chernaya.
Physical and Magical Traits: Karlu-Chatil exhibit a variety of physical and magical traits, often a mixture of the abilities seen in the three primary types of Feyn: Chatillians, Tovag, and Meliae. These traits can vary significantly between individuals. Some Karlu-Chatil might possess subtle powers, such as minor shape-shifting or enhanced perception, while others might exhibit more noticeable features, like the Tovag's bestial strength or the Meliae's ability to influence emotions through pheromones.
The appearance of Karlu-Chatil also varies. Those who favor their human ancestry might live their entire lives unaware of their Feyn blood, only discovering it when a strange ability manifests. Conversely, those with more pronounced Feyn features, especially those resembling the Tovag, are often ostracized and labeled as "goblins" by human society. This term, originally a slur, has been reclaimed by some Karlu-Chatil as a badge of defiance.
Social Status and Interaction: Karlu-Chatil are generally outcasts in both human and Feyn societies, though they occasionally find acceptance among certain human cultures, particularly in the southern regions. The Chatillians are the most likely among the Feyn to show some sympathy toward them, viewing the Karlu-Chatil as tragic figures or, in some cases, as a mistake. The Tovag, on the other hand, are known to treat Karlu-Chatil with disdain, if not outright hostility. The Meliae’s views are more varied, with some ignoring the hybrids altogether, while others may exploit them for their own purposes.
Despite their often difficult existence, Karlu-Chatil are unique in that they face a choice at the time of their death: to embrace their Feyn nature and vanish entirely into the Void, or to renounce it and enter the cycle of human rebirth. This decision underscores the duality of their existence and the complex relationship they have with both their human and Feyn heritage.
Cultural Impact: In Chernayan culture, the Karlu-Chatil are surrounded by superstition and fear. Their presence often stirs unease, particularly in rural areas where suspicion of anything otherworldly runs high. Stories of Karlu-Chatil range from cautionary tales to outright horror, contributing to their status as pariahs.
