Misery Mire
Some lands of Altairus are wondrous. Others are scary. And some are just plain unpleasant. Misery Mire fits neatly into the third category. The domain of Porescoro, the mother of plagues, Misery Mire is not a place to travel without adequate preparation.
Geography
Misery Mire is located on the east coast of Cirkea, not far from The Nekomata Islands. It consists of a vast swampland infested with giant mushrooms, parasitic animals, and the greatest biodiversity of microorganisms in all of Altairus.
Climate
Misery Mire tends to be warm and wet throughout the year, with mild winters. This provides an ideal climate for its primary residents, bacteria and fungi, to flourish.
Fauna & Flora
The first flora you may notice in Misery Mire are giant mushrooms. Living off Misery Mire's abundant supply of freshwater, these come in all colors of the rainbow. Many can be used for medicinal purposes.
Attached to the giant mushrooms you may find organisms known as broken tooth crabs. These barnacle-like animals are actually not crabs at all, but parasitic organisms with hard, calcified shells in the shape of a broken tooth or miniature volcano. Emerging from the "hole" in the top of their shells is a deep red, blood-like substance. This substance is actually a waste product that can help cure many maladies, from headaches to colic and many nerve disorders.
Other animals in this area include the Lolmischo (rash mice), rodents that chew off skin and leave blistering welts when they bite, Tculites (mire urchins), turtle-like animals that have venomous spikes on their shells, and Lilyins (snot fish), invertebrates resembling pink hagfish that defend themselves by secreting mucus carrying rhinoviruses and other infections.
With all this in mind, it is inadvisable to attempt to traverse Misery Mire without some form of Personal Protective Equipment. In fact, it is strongly advised to avoid Misery Mire at all costs unless strictly necessary.
Natural Resources
Despite what you may think, many medicinal plants and fungi grow naturally in Misery Mire. Penicillin is one such example, but even the dangerous, venomous animals of Misery Mire carry their own cures with them. The venom of these creatures, when brewed properly into potions, can cure many ailments. This is perhaps the only good reason to ever set foot into Misery Mire.
History
Though Porescoro saved Altairus, Mutamoph and Fatamoph knew that her powers were too dangerous to allow to spread into the rest of Altairus. As a compromise, they gave her domain over Misery Mire. On her journey to the forlorn fen, it is said that many of Altairus's medicinal herbs sprung from her footsteps.
