Ladonia of the Twelve Islands

Ladonia is the Dragonborn realm, a collection of islands in the Pyraean Ocean, formed in the devastation of the Cataclysm. Located some six hundred miles west of Argea, it represents the last remnants of the northern draconic domain of Auris. Over time, each metallic and chromatic phalanx claimed an island or island group for its own, while the geodic phalanges fit themselves in where they could. Before the Cataclysm, Auris was in the keeping of the metallic phalanges, and many of the chromatic dragonborn who came as refugees from the wreck of Ladon still insist that they were forced into the poorer territories.   In the Cladelands, the dragon born created great cities, partly built up above the ground, partly cut into the mountainsides. Known as bruken, these cities house not only the dragonborn and their coldfolk slaves, but also the galleries, collections of draconic relics held as communal heirlooms by the highborn of each clade. It is these relics, thick with Dzenmisa, that impart many of the environmental changes associated with dragon lairs on the islands.   To the original ten islands or groups, the dragonborn added two more. Axia is a great city on an artificial island, designed to be a non-partisan capital. Around Axia, at the centre of the archipelago, the waters are warm and pleasant. To the north they are warmer, and to the south cooler, and never colder than around the last of the Twelve, the Grey Islet.

The lizardfolk of Ladonia call themselves Coldfolk – the dragonborn are hotfolk, as are mammalian races – and occupy a lowly position in the archipelago’s society. They are subordinate to the meanest of dragonborn, but enjoy a status born of utility, having the numbers, and the generations of experience, to undertake vital infrastructure tasks that the dragonborn have long-since forgotten how to perform. Their numbers grow much faster than those of the dragonborn, and a steady stream of coldfolk leave the islands to join the travelling clutches in Caino or Yethera, or to seek their fortunes in the Scaled Kingdoms of Suto.   There is also a sizable population of ‘warmfolk’; impure dragonborn with lizardfolk blood, or lizardfolk with slight draconic traits.
