Birdkin
Birdkin, are the original bird race. They have the form of eagles, parrots, flamingos and peacocks. Birdkin found a home at the Sky Holm as guardian warriors and entertainers to the Jann Djinasi. There are also living alongside the Owlin of Neuvoterre and some smaller towns and villages.
If creating this race use stats for Aarocockra and flavour it with the bird of choice just avoid crows and owls.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Birdkin resemble humanoid birds. Halfway along the edge of each wing was a hand with three human-sized fingers and an opposable thumb. An elongated fourth finger extended the length of the wing and locked in place during flight. The hands could not grasp while flying, but they were nearly as useful as human hands when an Birdkin was perched and its wings were folded back. Their powerful legs ended in four sharp talons that could unlock and fold back to reveal another pair of functional hands.
Behaviour
Birdkin are generally peaceful creatures who cherish their solitude. They were known to be extremely claustrophobic, often refusing to enter caves or other enclosed spaces. This can be seen reflected in their very open plan living with minimal walls and lack of windows and use of thin fabrics for doors that are rarely closed. Male Birdkin tend to have very short tempers and are known to fly into fits of rage when a perceived wrong occurred.
Additional Information
Social Structure
As a society Birdkin operate as a matriarchy with females usually chosen as leaders, as society deemed them far more controlled emotionally. They do vote in these leaders in a democratic fashion. Males are not forbidden from running for office, but society was strongly against their election.
The leader of the guard is usually a male but can sometimes be a female, this was usually not voted in but instead a fight for power on a cliff face with wings tied down. This is not intended as a fight to the death but an effort to show skill and strength both mental and physical. The whole community will gather to watch this entertainment.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
All bird folk use first names that are common in society and use the name of the tree they were born from or the tree their family were born from. eg. Morgana of the Fir
Relationship Ideals
They do not believe in monogamy and marriage is an unknown concept. Therefore they can be very flirtatious species who flirt with any race and often any gender. Many are bards and “entertainers” due to this aspect.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Their small community is very secluded and their only other race they interact with is the Jann Djinasi of the temple and they see them as equals. Other races that interact with them they are standoffish with them as they do not trust what they don’t know. However once they build trust they are loyal and loving creatures always there for those they care for.
Aarakocra understand and speak common, but when they speak it, they punctuate their speech with caws, whistles, and other bird-like sounds.
