The Bitterlands (Bit-Ehr-L-AE-n-d-z)
The Bitterlands are a massive tundra, with vast expanses of frozen ground and sparse vegetation, with harsh and unforgiving weather conditions that can quickly become deadly for those who are unprepared. Rugged hills and mountains rise up from the frozen ground. The Bitterlands are a place of stark beauty and unforgiving challenges, where only the strongest and most resilient can survive.
Geography
The western part of the Bitterlands is a cold, barren tundra. The ground is frozen solid and covered with snow and ice year-round. The only vegetation that can grow in this area is moss and lichen, which cling to rocks and boulders. The western tundra is home to many small animals such as arctic foxes, hares, and rodents.
The eastern part of the Bitterlands is covered in a large mountain range. The most notable of these peaks are Mount Seraphim in the east, Starfall Peak in the center, Iceheart Peak in the north, and Mount Winterpeak in the south. These mountains are a mix of high peaks and deep valleys, and they are home to a variety of creatures such as wolves, bears, and mountain goats.
Ecosystem Cycles
During the summer months, the Bitterlands come alive with activity as plants and animals take advantage of the short growing season. Plants such as lichens, mosses, and dwarf shrubs are able to grow in the thin layer of soil that covers the permafrost. These plants provide food and shelter for the many animals that call the tundra home, including caribou, muskoxen, wolves, and foxes.
As winter approaches, the Bitterlands enter a period of dormancy. The ground freezes, and the plants die back, leaving the landscape covered in snow and ice. During this time, many of the animals that live here must rely on stored food reserves to survive, while others migrate to warmer areas to escape the harsh conditions.
As spring arrives, the cycle begins anew. The snow and ice begin to melt, providing much-needed moisture to the soil. This allows new plants to grow, which in turn attract insects and other small creatures. As the growing season progresses, larger herbivores such as caribou and muskoxen return to feed on the newly grown vegetation. This, in turn, attracts predators such as wolves and foxes, who hunt these herbivores for food.
Localized Phenomena
Sylphrena, the legendary sea wyrm, is said to make her home in the depths of the ocean just off the coast of Auroranin. The creature is said to be massive, with shimmering scales that glitter in the sunlight and a powerful breath that can cause the aurora borealis to appear in the sky above the city.
According to local legends, when Sylphrena dreams, her breath mixes with the ocean mist and creates a powerful magical force that causes an aurora to appear in the sky.
The aurora created by Sylphrena is said to be a mesmerizing display of light that can be seen for miles around. However, it is said to be most vibrant and awe-inspiring within the borders of Auroranin itself. The city's residents believe that the aurora is a sign of good fortune and prosperity, and many festivals and celebrations are held in its honor.
Despite the joy that the aurora brings, there is also a sense of trepidation. The legend warns that if Sylphrena were ever to awaken from her slumber, she could unleash untold destruction upon the land. The people of Auroranin hold onto the belief that as long as Sylphrena remains asleep, the city will continue to prosper under the light of the aurora.
Climate
the climate is mostly subarctic with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The western part of the Bitterlands is characterized by a tundra climate, with bitterly cold temperatures and little precipitation, resulting in an arid and icy landscape. The eastern side, with its mountainous terrain, experiences more snowfall and has a higher altitude, resulting in colder temperatures overall. The area around Mount Seraphim, in particular, is known for its heavy snowfalls, making travel difficult and dangerous during the winter months.
