Zhang Xiong

Xiong Zhang (a.k.a. The Bear)

Zhang Xiong, also known as the Bear. Before Emperor Zou's bloody Ascension, Xiong was a powerful cultivator of the Cold Wolf Sect and famous for his adventures with Gao Zhong Hu, the Tiger. During the Ascension his sect was destroyed by a Garalese army and he and his family arrested. Unable to ask his six year old son to die for the sake of family honor, Xiong saved himself and his family from execution by publically pleading for his life before Emperor Zou. His plea was granted after this humiliation, but his golden core destroyed on Zou's orders. Afterward, Xiong settled in Jiliang, a small, mountainous town located near the Garalese border.
In the chaos of Zou's reign he, his wife, Ruya Ilkin, Wei Ang Jian, and Wei Lian quietly assisted friends and vulnerable towns and villages by giving them martial training and military supplies. He kept these actions a secret from his children - particularly from his eldest, Huai Shi, with whom he argued bitterly for over ten years about moving on with his life rather than seeking revenge for what was done to Xiong and the family.
Xiong played a key role in the War of Eternal Day, training new recruits and heading the Gilded Retribution, the assassination of Emperor Zou.

Life

Early Career

Xiong was a brash and talented cultivator who engaged frequently in sect politics, quests, and conflicts, winning a reputation for strength and boldness. He contributed significantly in increasing the fame of his already prestigious sect, along with other promising young cultivators such as the Meng sisters, and Wan Gang.
Initially, Xiong hoped to win the honor of marrying Meng Lianhua, a beautiful and brilliant cultivator. Knowing his family was not as elevated as the Mengs, he approached her younger sister Yin Da to ask for help in proving his suitability through his personal prowess. He recognized that her talents and skills rivaled that of Lianhua's, though Yin Da purposefully lived in her sister's shadow. Yin Da reluctantly agreed to help; Xiong wanted to find a long-hidden cache of ancient relics that piqued her interest. Xiong also enlisted his friend Gao Zhong Hu in his quest. It wasn't until his engagement to Lianhua that Xiong realized that in the course of their travels his affections had turned towards Yin Da. After a sharp fight about Yin Da refusing to be a second choice, Xiong coordinated an end to his engagement with Lianhua and repaired his relationship with Yin Da. The families arranged a marriage between Xiong and Yin Da shortly after.

The Ascension and the Cold Wolf Massacre

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Xiong is heavyset and muscled. He has sunken eyes in a stern, broad face and sports a goatee. Following the War of Eternal Day, Xiong's right leg is amputated and most of his left ear has been removed from an arrow wound.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

A respect for the sanctity of life guides every choice Xiong makes, surprising in a man so brash. As a younger man he possessed a visible and forceful optimism and drive; after the Coup he is considerably more jaded, but values many of the same ideals.   Xiong places a great deal of emphasis on personal and family honor, but sacrifices his ideals to keep his family alive. His views on the subject are considerably more complex now.

Virtues & Personality perks

Xiong exemplifies the Zhang family's loyalty and moral courage. He will go to great lengths to show compassion to those in need, and he takes pride in his family. He and his wife support each other through their tumultuous shifts in fortune and create space for the anger and grief the other has. Xiong also has a tendency to make really dumb jokes to defuse her tension in bad moments, with varied success.

Vices & Personality flaws

Xiong's brash nature has gotten him constantly in and out of trouble over the course of his life, and he has a tendency to be inflexible, especially when worried about a loved one. The removal of his golden core was a great blow to his pride that created a deep rift of bitterness between him and the world. He is a regular drinker at the best of times; after the war, crippled and slow to recover, he lapses into self-destructive alcoholism for the better part of a year before he gets it under control again.

Representation & Legacy

Xiong's legacy as one of the empire's most formiddable warriors of his time takes a blow after his humiliation before Emperor Zou. His tarnished reputation leaves him in obscurity until the War of Eternal Day. The assassination of Emperor Zou is colloquially referred to as the Bear's Revenge, both through his actions and those of his son Huai Shi.

Social

Religious Views

As a cultivator of the Hanlangong sect, Xiong practiced as Hantzu clergy and assisted with spiritual matters as well as a cultivator's other duties of handling spirits and demons. Xiong's beliefs and opinions on his religion ran deep, and he fostered his connection to the Goddess Chenguang. Xiong was outraged by the changes Emperor Zou made to Hantzu doctrine and practices after his Ascension, including the transfer of clerical authority from the sects to government bureaucrats.
"I've made a mockery of myself, but they've made a mockery of the goddess."
