Nawnoxscu
The Nawnoxscu are localized descendants of Locii , themselves a subspecies of the Halfwings, who live in the Eskern Forest and have unique properties among the mysterious and long-living folks of Eskern.
The Nawnoxscu are forest-dwelling, nocturnal people whose lifespans extend even beyond those of the Glendatis and Vespula due to their inhabiting Eskern Forest, where time flows differently. Although they are not the only group indigenous to Eskern, they are by far the best known and organized of the area.
They are the longest living Halfwing species and live up to nine times longer than other Locii, who typically live for about 10 Oak and Laurel Cycles (180 years). Some Nawnoxscu claim to be over a thousand years old.
While Locii tend to be short with compact, top heavy bodies, the Nawnoxscu who leave the Forest from time to time seem to grow taller on average. This is thought to be due to the increase in sunlight. Their skin tends to be pallid and argyric, but they tan very easily in the sunlight. It is common for those who undergo molting outside the forest to develop dark skin, however, the irridiescent body and facial hair remains.
Their organs contain chiten, which seen especially in how they seem to not age in appearance or get wrinkles, but there are other signs of aging (which is looked upon as attaining wisdom). One is that their eyes become sunken and begin to bulge, which then causes pronounced, rigid wrinkles in the face. They begin experiencing “death rattles” as the chiten in their internal organs begins to constrict their lungs, and often look quite frightening as a result. This tends to be the point wherein they undergo their last Oak and Laurel Cycle, however, while these cycles last 18 years outside of the Eskern Forest, they last 162 years in the forest.
The Nawnoxscu who leave the forest do age differently if they leave permanantly and do not return to hibernate, typically passing away younger, particularly during the Indifferent Suns, which they seem especially vulnerable to.
Naming Traditions
Family names
Their name means “ninth-night hounds” but carries the double meaning of “night wolves”, some warriors instead adopt this translation in order to strike fear into their foes, using the literal word for wolf in their name, “blaidios” - leading to names such as Noxblaidd, Noxblythe, and such - seen in the current Eldress of the Nawnoxscu, Corotica Nosblaidd.
