Glendatis

The Glendatis are a Cambion culture consisting of Prydyn who intermixed with local Millenakos species, particularly the Maydens who live in waterlogged areas, and the Halobates people of the Morvoren Islands. They replaced the indigenous population almost entirely where they settled, though this seems to be due to assimilation rather than war. The name is also used interchangeably with Odonata, who live in the Northern archipelagos.

Who are they and what do they look like?

  • Tall and relatively slim
  • Black compound eyes
  • Hair is usually black or dark brown, sometimes bleached blonde
  • Skin tone is heavy with blue and grey undertones

What are their senses or perceptions?

  • Amazing eyesight
  • Average hearing
  • Sensitive to vibrations
  • Very little sense of smell/taste

Where are they in your setting?

  • West Kargast (Demetea)
  • Morvoren Islands
  • Some are in Meldland, but their stronghold is the West

How do they survive in their environment?

  • They metabolize very slowly so they age slowly as well, and can live off of little nutrients
  • They can adapt what they consume, so they can use food to modify their genes
  • They have few issues with fertility or virility, which is common among other species, though their fecundity does not extend past about ten to a dozen offspring. However, because they lay eggs, they do not deal with the same stresses of live birth which many neighbouring species face.
  • Their bodies are unnaturally light which allows them to glide between updrafts and reed-forests, lending them to have extended mobility compared to their neighbours

What is their general attitude?

  • Very traditional and focused on filial piety and respect for ancestors/elders
  • Collectivist in terms of society - the outlier is expected to conform and work on behalf of the community
  • They are henotheistic, worshipping the sea and its ancestors, but acknowledge other deities
  • Clan based society, also very feudal

How do they feel about the other peoples?

  • Tend to be xenophobic and see foreign species as novelties, though wealthier clans are more openminded and progressive
  • Are generally diplomatic but see most relationships as transactional
  • Believe in assimilation as they see their culture as superior and less reliant on foreigners

Culture

Average technological level

They rely on analog technology, but not electricity like the Gannwyll Gwydd do. They use water cycling machines in some of their flooded valleys to distribute nutrients and minerals around, and have created bioluminescent growths which can store sound. They use large shells equipped with a talisman of punchcards to send messages.

Foods & Cuisine

They don't eat a lot of cooked food, or a lot of plants aside from a few plants which grow around brackish water. They consume a lot of salt for the electrolites, and eat the minerals off of wet rocks, since the arrival of the Gannwyll Gwydd they have taken to consuming and adding algae to their diet. For protein, they mostly live off of shellfish, tadpoles, and minnows, eating them raw.

Ideals

Courtship Ideals

Due to the mercantile nature of their society, there is a lot of attention paid to dowries and the more elaborate and expensive the dowry/proposal, the more blessed the marriage is said to be.
