Nicor
Nicors are a type of water demon thought to have originally been created from the corrupted Souls of Nykr, a precursor to Fey Nixies and a relative of the Sluagh. It is not known how these Fey beings were corrupted, but some suggest that Azazel may have had some involvement through his original Whisperings. When these corrupted Souls were cast out of Tìr na Sìthe, they "fell" to the Abyss and were welcomed there for their chaotic, murderous natures.
Nicors are most famous for drowning their victims before tearing them apart and feasting on their flesh. They have little care for who or what they kill and consume, but seem to relish watching their victims struggle beneath the water. If their prey cannot be drowned for any reason, they will simply rend them limb from limb while they are still alive.
As a Lesser Demon, Nicors have been seen relatively frequently within the Material Plane, and are often used as a warning against children playing near deep pools of water.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Nicors have a serpentine body topped with a Human-like torso but without arms. Their heads are vaguely ape-like with a pig-like snout, and from their shoulders, where wings would normally sit, are two pairs of tentacles; one pair blunt, the other with a nasty stinger on the end. Their bodies are covered in a seaweed-like "hair" that acts as camouflage for them within watery environments. This "hair" is actually extensions of their skin, and is meant to support the production and distribution of Nicor poison.
Genetics and Reproduction
Nicors are created when a Soul with an affinity for water turns to evil and becomes corrupted. These Souls are often dragged to the Abyss while still alive, and are then subjected to a horrific transformation process. These Souls can be Mortal, Fey, Dragonkin, or even a Sapient Beast in origin.
Alternatively, Nicors can be created by a Demon of Demon Lord or Demon Prince status by tearing a Nicor into two parts and then "reforming" them into two new Nicors.
When a Nicor is created, they lose all sense of what it meant to be a Sapient Soul, and become little more than cruel, malicious beings driven by a desire for death.
Ecology and Habitats
Nicors are predominantly water-based creatures, though they are known to be amphibious. They prefer moist conditions, though the temperature of the water is of little concern to them unless it becomes cold enough to freeze the water. Nicors caught in frozen water will hibernate until they are released or summoned elsewhere through magic.
In the Abyss, Nicors are mainly found in the foetid rivers of the Kandariya Basin, which surrounds the base of Mount Siryon.
Dietary Needs and Habits
As Demons, Nicors do not technically need to eat or drink, but will consume the flesh of their enemies regardless. It is thought that this consumption is a way to more quickly replenish physical and magical strength after exertion, but this has never been proven.
Behaviour
Despite being classified as a Lesser Demon, Nicors are considered Sapient due to their capacity for complex language and self-awareness. They are also capable of following complex instructions, despite their chaotic natures and tendency to be easily distracted by the presence of potential prey.
Nicors are intelligent Demons capable of forward planning and critical thinking, but they are also sadistic and malicious. They primarily operate out of self-interest and self-preservation, desiring everything they believe to be "rightfully theirs", much like other Demons. Their ability to think and use logical patterns is often overshadowed by their deep cruelty and desire for bloodshed. Nicors embrace the chaos of killing and the hunt, stalking and attacking those who come too close to their locations with little thought as to purpose and intent of their prey.
They recognise only the authority of those stronger than them, but will rarely put themselves out for that authority unless they have something to gain from it. The exception to this is Azazel, who holds the Demonic Book of Names and thus has complete control over them.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
As with all Demons, the body of a Nicor dissolves into sticky ichor 48 hours after being slain, so harvesting and using materials is very difficult. The only part of a Nicor that does not dissolve is their tentacle claws, though nobody is sure why this is.
Nicor "hair" is well known for its potent poisons, which can be harvested from both living and "dead" creatures, though they must be used within the 48 hour window of removal or death as the poisons are considered unstable, meaning they cannot be preserved. Their tentacle claws are also useful for making weapons, though it takes a specialised Master to craft from them.
The flesh of the Nicor is highly poisonous and cannot be consumed, though boiling the flesh can also produce poisons similar in strength to the hair. Nicor eyes can be used as components for potions and spells related to eyesight, while the tongue is used for ones related to telepathy.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Nicors are predominantly found in the Abyss, though some have taken up residence in Purgatorio after following the Kandariya Cinjir there. In the Material Plane, they are most commonly found hiding in swamps or underwater cave systems, where they can easily stalk feast upon their prey.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Nicors have Darkvision and a limited form of Tremorsense that only works within water. Additionally, they are capable of smelling blood within water from up to three miles away, and can sense the presence of Sapient creatures through their telepathy.
Biological, Magical and Supernatural Abilities
Nicors communicate through telepathy using their tongue as a focus, and do not need to share a language with a creature in order to communicate. They naturally possess a paralytic Aura that they use to contain their prey, and are capable of controlling water to a limited degree.
However, for the most part, Nicors rely on their natural stealth and the element of surprise to capture their prey, leaping out of their watery abodes and capturing their targets to drown them before tearing them apart with their tentacles and teeth.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Like all Fiends, Nicors gain a True Name when they are created, which they themselves immediately know. Azazel, as the creator of the Demonic Book of Names, knows the True Names of every Demon ever created, thus has power over them. However, few Nicors ever take an assumed name as they feel they have no real need for them.
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Nicors live solitary lives and maintain their territories fiercely. If another Nicor enters their territory, they will fight until one of them backs down and rescinds their claim on the territory. Few Nicors will fight to the death, as they have a desire for self-preservation.
Because of this solitary existence, there is no single "culture" that surrounds Nicors other than hierarchy being determined by strength.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Nicors, like all Demons, see all other creatures as being lesser than themselves, and therefore view them only as playthings to be toyed with. They particularly despise Devils, Celestials, and Deities, though Nicors will generally avoid conflict with those that they know to be more powerful than themselves.
Combat and Eradication
Combat Considerations
Nicors are stronger in water than on land, and are resistant to magics that utilise water or deal cold damage. Additionally, Nicors are immune to poisons. They have reach with their tentacles and are capable of highly effective stealth techniques.
Due to their Demonic nature, Nicors cannot be poisoned, drowned or starved. Likewise, they cannot be knocked prone while within water, and do not feel exhaustion.
Expulsion Techniques
Nicors can only be truly killed within the Abyss, thus "killing" them elsewhere will simply send their essence back to the Abyss to be reformed. Preventing a Nicor from returning to its former Material Plane location would require the destruction of the Planar Gate or Weeping Tear that they entered the Plane through.
