Honey Buns
A staple of food tables across all of A'arde, variations of the Honey Bun can be found on all continents, and across all levels of society. Also known as Honey Cakes, Honey Rolls, or Mini Honey-Breads, Honey Buns are a sweet and versatile bread product that can be eaten at any time of day, for any meal.
Variations of the Honey Bun generally involve the shaping of the bun, or the brushing of the top crust with whipped honey butter. Additionally, the type of honey used can change the taste of the buns. Honey Buns in Noble households tend to have deeper flavours than Common buns, as bakers in these households often have access to Chill Rooms, which allow them to cool the dough for 24 hours after shaping (before the second rise). This process allows the flavour to develop, resulting in a more delicious, fluffy bread.
While Honey Buns are most commonly seen at the dinner table, particularly served alongside beef stews and pot roasts, they are also used at breakfast and lunch, served with cheese, cooled sliced meat, yoghurt and fruit.
History
While it is believed that some form of Honey Bun existed before the Fall of the Age of Arcana, the only known variants of the recipes that have not changed since that time are those of Sylvan origin, namely Mil-Arain and Mil-Sìthe-Arain, which use regular honey and Mil-Seillean-Sìthe respectively. All other current recipes have arisen since the Age of Darkness, where access to secure settlements and the required ingredients for anything more than simple, unleavened bread were minimal. The first recorded "new" recipe of honey rolls or honey bread dates back to the early Age of Darkness, and is an unleavened honey bread made with milk, egg, honey, olive oil, salt, and generic flour. These breads could be made in makeshift ovens built from clay and stone, and were relatively simple and quick to make. The lack of yeast and addition of honey (which could be collected from wild hives) meant that the bread could last for a couple of days when packaged correctly due to the presence of natural preservatives within the honey. Additionally, these breads appealed to children as well as adults, encouraging picky eaters to eat well on journeys through dangerous territory. Its flexibility as both a snack and an accompaniment to what could be otherwise bland travelling food made it extremely popular amongst travellers of the Age.
As the Age of Darkness settled and civilisations began rebuilding, honey bread evolved to include yeast and butter, giving rise to the current iteration of Honey Buns seen today. These breads were fluffier and less dense than their unleavened counterparts, and took much longer to make, but with the increase in static settlements and a lowering need for communities to travel to find food and water, such issues proved mild for the majority of folks.
In the current time, Honey Buns are a common staple of most households, with at least one meal a day usually containing some form of Honey Bun.
