Well, I went to check out this Sunken fortress, in hopes that we'd find some answers there about what the elves who used to live here were like. I guess I sorta found out some answers, but mostly just got more confused. When we got in, there, we walked a ways through the fort, until we came to a pool filled with water. Kaecil did something to let us breathe the water, which was an interesting experience. One I wish I'd known back in my smuggling days. Well, we went in and found ourselves in a hall of murals depicting events of times long past. Not really sure what happened next, but while we were looking at the murals, somehow we found ourselves transported... to the past? I think? I'm not really sure if we actually got brought back in time, or if we were reliving someone else's memories. Thinking back on it, it was probably the latter. I could understand them, even though I don't know the local elvish tongue. The first thing I remember was hearing in my head "Elo-ren needs you."
After all that, we were brought back to the fort we were just exploring, but before it had sunken into the swamp. There was a massive battle all around us. I never understood before what a battle was actually like; the terror in people's eyes, the weariness, the constant stress, the stench. I'm surprised I made it through one battle. I now thank Pelor every day that Mirabella made it through all of hers. We fought seemingly unending hordes of zombies, some zombie beholders, some sort of abomination with weird, creepy, long claws. And then we had to go save the civilians.
On our way, we were beset by another horde of zombies, backed by some sort of long snakelike skeletal creatures. It was a hard fight, and at one point something happened to Cayden. He stood frozen, and some zombies made it through our line to attack him. It was a close call, there, but we got managed to finish them off, just in time for the civilians from the village to make it across the bridge. We moved to cover their retreat, despite reports of a draugr, a dragon, and seeing some massive beast come out of the ocean. I mean, this thing was maybe as tall as the spire of Vareholm at the shoulder. We covered the retreat of the civilians back to the fortress, but as we were crossing the final bridge, the dragon caught up to us. Only it wasn't a living dragon, it's flesh had all been stripped away. It did still breathe lightning at us, which I was lucky enough to avoid, but it looked like it woulda hurt. When it finally came close enough to the ground for us to fight it, we surrounded the creature, and luckily managed to keep it from making an escape before we could destroy it.
After we finished off the dragon-skeleton and some draugr, everything faded out again. We were greeted by an entity calling himself "Rilatar Xyrren." I got the feeling he was some sort of celestial creature, but he had taken on the form of an elf, and thanked us for not desecrating his home. I'm not sure if he was referring to the current or past fortress as his home, or what we could have done to desecrate it. Then he gave us all gifts. I received a ring, called "The Amber Flame," which surrounds me in a cloak of flames. It'll be nice next time I have to fight the godsdamned trees, but I do worry that it'll freak Mirabella.
But yeah, lots of questions, not many answers.
