Stories and Dark Rituals

Some of Ganoes... motivation, I suppose, came to light today. He told me a little of his story, in return for me telling a little of mine. His journey seems like it has been a difficult one. And I know he's been both possessed and deceitful, but somehow I believe this. He seemed honest. And, I mean... It is a bit of an outlandish story. He's smart enough that if he wanted to deceive me he would have made up something tearjerking, but more believable.
 
So, there's no way to write this down tactfully, I suppose, so I will just write it. He told me that his mother tangled with an evil cult of some sort, he didn't know which. And while she was pregnant with him she was sacrificed as part of some sort of dark ritual. I mean, what the fuck? Who sacrifices a pregnant woman in a ritual? Was she part of this cult? Did she go along with it? Or was she an innocent woman kidnapped and killed? I really hope I don't dream about this tonight...
 
But he didn't die. A group of halflings came across the scene later, somehow realized that he was still alive within his mother's womb and got him out. He told me he doesn't remember any of this, but only found out when weird things started happening as he grew older. He ended up destroying half of his house with uncontrollable powers, and that was when his adopted family told him the story of his birth.
 
So, he is looking for clues. About what is happening to him now, and about what happened to his mother. And I can't help but think... Should he be alive? No fetus survives inside a mother's body like that for long enough for a ritual to finish and an unrelated group to come across the scene. It must have been hours, at least. And whatever that ritual was, for it to require the sacrifice of a pregnant woman it was hardly the good and blessed kind.
 
It makes me think that this possession, the dark things that seem to gather around him, it isn't new. Something happened to him when he participated in that ritual as an unborn baby, and I think it's still following him today. It makes me worry.
