Pacing. Nervous, restless and uneasy pacing. That’s what Arkadius had been doing for hours, trying to get rid of the excess energy that had been building in his body over the last few days… weeks… months… years. At first, he was fine with it, trying to settle down and make a home with the one he loved. They’d both been fine with it, but now it was starting to grate on him. He needed to go out and do something that wasn’t in the city. Waterdeep wasn’t his home, it would never be, his home was out there in the world.
”Arkadius, honey. What’s wrong?”, asked a half-elf, who had appeared and was now leaning on the wall of the doorway between the office room and the hallway. Concern was written all over the half-elf’s facial features, as he watched Arkadius pacing around the room.
”You know what’s wrong. Don’t act like you don’t, because neither of us is that stupid,” he snapped back quickly and angrily. The moment he finished the sentence, he stopped pacing, slapped his hand against his eyes and forehead quickly, before facing the half-elf. ”I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to say that.”
The half-elf stood up straight and sighed, walking towards Arkadius. “Yes, Arkadius, you did, but we’re both glad you did say it.” He wrapped his arms around Arkadius’ hips, and hugged him tightly. “As you say, neither of us is stupid. But humour me, in your own words… what is wrong?”
Arkadius sighed as well, visibly more relaxed. “I can’t bear this anymore. This… idyllic life in the city, a life of peace and prosperity. You know as well as I do that it isn’t meant for us. We can’t just… sit around and not do things. We can’t settle down. Not while She is still out there. I mean, how do you do it?! How are you so relaxed, when She could be right outside, waiting for us. I can’t relax, I can’t forget Her, and…”
The half-elf put a finger on Arkadius’ mouth, “I haven’t once forgotten the promise we have both made to Her. Don’t think I haven’t, not for a second. We’ve never spoken about this, but I promise you this is what She wanted. Well…” his voice dropped to a whisper after he chuckled to himself for a moment, “I don’t think She quite expected us to travel to Waterdeep, get married and settle down quite like this.”
Arkadius was confused. Neither of the pair had discussed their situation since they had arrived and set up home in Waterdeep four years ago, even though it had felt wrong to Arkadius that they were settling down rather than continuing their lifelong journey. “She… wanted us to not continue on the journey? What do you mean?”
The half-elf gave Arkadius a quick kiss before letting go of him and walking towards the door. “Can we not have this conversation in the middle of the night? Can we also not discuss this on your birthday, too? We can just go back to bed, and…”
The half-elf’s words were interrupted, and his sentence cut short by a sharp knocking from the hallway. Arkadius’ eyes darted straight to the space behind the half-elf, who had also visibly tensed up. After a split second, he seemed to relax. “I wonder who that is, knocking the door at this time of night?”
Arkadius was still tense, paranoia very much settled in his head. “Jornos…”
