Rhogad the Slayer did not spend much of his life in the legion he was born into. He was born smaller in stature and physically weaker than his fellows. The legion deemed him a waste of their limited food supply and exiled him before he reached adulthood.
He made his way to a nearby port town and found the most profitable work that allowed him to leverage his considerable martial training: piracy. His training in the legion gave him a notable advantage in combat compared to the average pirate or merchant. Mercenary guards gave him trouble at first, but Rhogad found that while he was still physically weaker and smaller than his foes, as he matured and became fully accustomed to his body, he was significantly faster than his foes. He even found that he had a modest talent in magic, which he used to bind his weapons to himself, so that he would never go unarmed.
Thus, with cutlass in one hand and pistol in the other, Rhogad made a name for himself. He became known as the "Slayer" for the way he charged head first into battle when boarding ships, cutting down deckhands and mercenaries alike until the decks ran crimson with their blood. After nearly a decade as a marauder on the high seas, Rhogad the Slayer had his own ship (The Stormhunter), and both the fear and respect of the other pirate captains.
However, all good things must come to an end. During a raid on a particularly valuable merchant vessel, he was betrayed by his first mate, Hindenburg, and a few mutinous members of his crew. In the ensuing chaos of the now three-sided battle, Rhogad was struck by a poisoned blade and knocked overboard. He washed up on shore a day later, exhausted and barely clinging to life. While he lay unconscious on the beach, he was found and captured by a passing patrol. When Rhogad finally awoke from a feverish sleep, he found himself shackled in the hold of a strange ship with no idea what fate his apparent captors had in store for him.
