Armando "Mandy" Venturi was born in the year 1256, to parents Francis and Lucia Venturi. He grew up on his grandparents farm, outside the city of Darynth. From his grandmother, he acquired a love for baking. She taught him that baking is about more than just food. Its an art and an expression of self.
Armando helped around the farm. He grew incredibly strong at a young age from working the fields, carrying bales of hay, and wrangling livestock. From his family he learned how to work hard and how to take care of others.
In the year 1270, when Armando was 14, his parents decided that he should move to Darynth, the "Big City". There he could receive a real education and excel beyond his upbringing as a farm hand. His Aunt Celia and Uncle Chester ran an inn in the city, The Hog and Hearth. They were happy to give him lodging as long as he cooked for the guests. His twin cousins Lottie and Leo also lived and worked at the inn.
Sadly, Armando never fit in with the city kids. Neither did his little brother, Felix. Both were made fun of for being country bumpkins. Armando was very intelligent, but uneducated. He had thick skin and payed no mind to the insults. But he couldn't stand seeing Felix be bullied. Felix was a runt with a bit of a country drawl. Armando embraced every opportunity to defend and protect him. Armando developed a skill for scrappy fighting. There was no punch he wouldn't take for Felix, and no enemy he was afraid to punch back.
Before long, the fighting went beyond schoolyard bullies and Armando joined an underground fight club. It was a great outlet for his frustration. He had to sneak out at night cause if Auntie and Uncle found out, they'd send him back to the farm. He couldn't hide the bruises and broken nose so they eventually caught him. He made a deal with them that he'd go legit and quit the fight club.
In 1274, Armando joined the DWF, the Darynth Wrestling Federation. He had a real knack for it. The matches were scripted so he only rarely got injured. He made a decent paycheck and finally made some good friends. He wrestled under several personas over the years.
In 1284, Armando met the love of his life. Marianna De León. She was an actress who stayed at the Hog and Hearth for a time when she first moved to Darynth. They quickly fell in love in and spent all their free time together. She had a passion for life and a smile that brightened the whole room. Marianna thought wrestling was too hard on Mandy's body and worried he was wearing himself down. She convinced him to give up wrestling and take his baking passion to the next level. She was helping him save money to open up his own bakery. They planned to start a family.
In 1287, the plague swept through Darynth. It took Felix first. Armando watched his ward, whom he swore to protect, wither and die. Armando was helpless. He couldn't take this hit for Felix. He couldn't even fight back. How do you punch a plague? Three months later, it took Marianna. She was with child.
Armando was devastated. He put down the rolling pin and picked up the bottle. He lost years to drinking in dive bars and ignoring the world. His cousins Lottie and Leo tried to pull him out of his stupor but it never lasted long. Eventually they got him back to the inn so he could find purpose in cooking again. He went through the motions but his heart wasn't in it.
In 1204, The Hog and Hearth burned down. It was likely arson sparked by post-revolutionary tensions. Aunt Celia had already passed, and Uncle Chester couldn't financially recover from the fire, so he retired to the family farm. Lottie and Leo decided to stay in the city. Something changed in Mandy that night. A wake up call that snapped him out of his spiral of self pity. He started wrestling again, adopting the persona of the folk hero The Devil of Darynth, and began volunteering to cook at the soup kitchen daily.
