Goliath paladin out for revenge for the desruction of her village
Found in the woods by the village hunter - Sigrid - Astrid had nothing but questions concerning her heritage. She was found along with a medallion bearing the crest of Thrym, so as her only clue, she learned all she could about him and other gods to try and find some answers. She was met with limited success, however, due to the limited resources of the small village and limited education - much of her time was spent hunting with her adoptive mother, who herself wasn't the brightest bulb. She got good at fighting at least.

Astrid's education is the best it could be given her circumstances. Sigrid wasn't exactly an academic, and they both spent much of their time hunting for the village, so what she does know is the fruition of her own research using the limited resources available.
Mental Trauma
Her village was burned to the ground, her friends and family killed (except Ryker), and then she was kidnapped and nearly sold into slavery. Not the best start to life as an adventurer.

She was taught by Sigrid to respect all life and not cause undue harm to others - but when a lot of problems can be solved with fists and you've got a lot of repressed anger, it seems a waste to not punch the assholes of the world.
