Dancing Dunes

Despite its rather inconspicuous name, the Dancing Dunes is a lively, and deadly, terrain, a shifting landscape of sand driven by powerful winds and exotic arcane forces. Its erratic nature is only exacerbated by the strange creatures that inhabit the ever-changing region and a civilization living in the Floating City, Adenim.

Geography

Because of the nature of the dunes, it is impossible to record any geographical features of the land, but aspects of the region such as weather and dune movement are tracked by Adenim, especially those which have clear patterns or are influenced by the seasons.
"Those dunes are quite the place. I one time sat at the edge of Adenim and watched for three days as they moved about. Beautiful."   -Valorean, the Searing

Dune Dance

The "Dance" is the movement of any dune throughout the region, so named because of the intricate pattern they follow, usually a clockwise circle around the center of the dunes. For as long as recorded history, no dune has ever over-lapped or combined with another, and their rotation correlates with the phase of the moon. Because of this, many of the dunes, mainly the largest, have names given to them and help guild the Aden Seekers, who guide merchants from outside the dunes to Adenim.

Weather

The weather in the dunes can change drastically over just a few minutes. While there isn't much rainfall in the region, the fairly common sandstorms can quickly turn into thunderstorms as winds reach higher speeds, which can be particularly dangerous for travelers because of the lack of shelter. The worst time for these storms is during the fall following rainstorms in the south.
"The best way to avoid getting sucked up in one of those twisters is not going into the dunes in the first place. The second way is to bury yourself as deep as possible in the sand. I personally prefer to just let them take me and see where I end up."   -Gul'raash
Another common weather phenomenon is tornadoes. The high winds in the area often lift sand into towering swirls, and although most are harmless, a larger one is capable of lifting a fully loaded mule and carrying them miles before dropping them from the sky.

Structures

For many years, it was believed that Adenim was the only structure within the region of the dunes. But after a merchant and his hired Seeker were forced to change course to avoid a storm, they stumbled to the low-point of a dune and discovered a large flat stone. Upon investigation, they found engravings and evidence of a larger structure buried beneath the sands. Adenians are continuing to search for more of the structure.
