The Knights' Song

Historical Details

Background

No one remembers where the song came from, and there are several sources from different countries who at one time of another claimed to have identified the original author. The composer is actually less of a mystery, as it seems to have taken the tune of an ancient working song from the fields of Ardad.   The words are in the common tongue, making it easy for them to be picked up by most people, although there are adaptations in the languages from Ospana, Artrouvia, Dobground and Annetsted.   There are also several theories as to which King and Princess the song could be referencing. The confusing use of both the words "villain" and "monster" makes it unclear whether this was a person, a creature or a person and a creature who were at fault. There's also a lack of clarity about what happened to the princess to put her in the way of this "villain". Did she run or was she kidnapped?   Some Zakkazana scholars from Ospana claim that it actually relates to an incident almost 700 years ago when a great niece of the then Ospanan king almost married someone from Druflyxt. The Zapassnee Knights were called to collect the errant princess and return her safely to the bosom of her family.   Most scholars, however, back the theory that this actually relates to the kidnapping of the Princess of Icros by a warlock who was living in the mountains between Icros and Dobground, and using his magic to create abhorrent beasts. It is the most popular theory because it includes the disappearance of an actual "daughter" and there is both a "villain" and a "huge monster".
