Pernrith

This settlement lies 180 miles north of Wolfpine, and 360 miles south of Ayrith; both along the King's Way.The town consists of 8 houses, and a Tavern called "The Brawny Draught".   Pernrith is remarkable only for the Brawny Draught and it's owner. Nyemtas Zorval is a tall and stout male silver dragonborn. Nyemtas appears extremely proud and sure of themselves. Above the bar is a pale, well made quarterstaff and there is a large notice stuck to the wall next to the bar. The notice reads:   "Any who want to cause trouble in this establishment will feel the wrath of the undefeated Zorval. You will leave here bloody and bruised for causing a disturbance. If you believe yourself tough, challenge me and, should you win, you will receive 50g and my staff. However, challengers must wager 150g of their own money, so as to not waste my time"   If the characters talk to Zorval, they can try to get him to talk about his past. After seeing Zorval fight a challenger, Shedlevesk Fireglow (if he is with the party) will say that there is something familiar about the way that Zorval fights, and will keep looking over at Zorval throughout the night. If the characters question Zorval, they can attempt a Charisma (persuasion) check to learn information. This check has a variable DC as follows:
  • 0-9: He angrily replies "My business is my own! I don't come into your home and interrogate you about your past, do I?" - If they attempt again, +5 to all DCs
  • 10-14: He calmly states "I'm not going to tell you anything about that. I don't even know you" - No effect
  • 15-19: He looks at the party in a friendly manner and says "I'm sorry; you seem like nice folks, but I don't know you nearly well enough to warrant me telling you about my past. I won this Tavern off its previous owner fairly and it is mine now. I will not speak of anything else at this time. Have a great night and enjoy a drink on me" - He will provide a round of free drinks for the players and have a drink with them - If the characters attempt again, -3 to all DCs
  • 20+: He takes the characters to the side, gesturing for Arizira to serve the customers. Once he is sitting with the players on a quite table, he explains that he doesn't remember much before 9 months ago. He has vague memories of shadowy figures that feel familiar to him, and of silvery mists, but then he woke up in a field not far from here, with the staff that rests above the bar. The previous tavernkeeper had a similar wager to him, but the reward was the bar. Zorval won the challenge and has been running the tavern ever since.
If the players have won Zorval's Challenge, reduce all DCs for the check by 5. To win Zorval's Challenge, a character must agree to wrestle Zorval until the winner admits defeat, or is knocked unconscious. This requires a series of Strength (athletics) checks as follows. The first check has a DC of 15. If the player wins, the DC is reduced by 3. If the player loses, the DC is increased by 3. Then a second round of checks occurs. This repeats until either the DC reaches 0, or the DC reaches 25, and the player character is knocked unconscious. If a player (such as Nox) has been blessed by their god for this fight, they can instead roll Wisdom (religion) checks. The prize is the player's gold back, with an additional 50g, and the Palewood Staff.
