The Marshals

The Interdimensional Marshal Service is a law enforcement agency headquartered in the town of Haven in Sanctuary Junction. While there are over a thousand Marshals, only a few are ever found at Headquarters, for a lawman's job is never done.

Principles and Mandate

The goal of the Marshal Service is to police and provide protection to everyone in the Realms. Their mandate is to provide assistance to those in need, protect those who cannot protect themselves, to always "get their man," and to act as a summary magistrate where no other jurisdiction supersedes.

Member Requirements

To join the Marshals, one must be an experienced World Walker, though any combination of natural ability, magic, and/or technology is allowed to meet the requirement. A Deputy Marshal must also demonstrate effective combat ability and proficiency in at least one type of firearm. Those with the foundations, but not the qualifications, may be trained. The applicant must also have no active warrants or bounties that the Service can identify. And finally, the applicant must be considered an adult as common to their species. If these requirements are met and the applicant passes their interview with a Senior Marshal, an Assistant Director, or the Director, they may take up their duties as a Deputy Marshal once they take their Oath.

I, __________, do solemnly swear that I will support, protect, and defend the Citizens of all the Realms against all entities, powers, or forces intending to do them harm; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.

Newly sworn-in deputies are required to take a two week training program (three weeks if additional combat training is required) to learn how to perform their new duties and determine their jurisdictional limits.

Conflict with Local Law Enforcement and Jurisdictions

It should come as no surprise that the Marshals often come into contact, and thus, conflict, with local law enforcement throughout the Realms. Technically, and by the strictures of their mandates, a Marshal must accede to the authority of local officials and officers. However, when local authority conflicts with the Marshal's mission, they often overstep their authority to complete it. Stronger local governments and officers can control this behavior. Sheriff Clayton "Clay" Henry of Haven, for example, has made it clear that the Marshals have no more law enforcement authority than any citizen of Haven town unless otherwise deputized. Outside of town, however, is another matter.

Controversy

A Marshal's police powers are absolute and the "laws" they enforce are purely within their own minds. They do not represent any government, legislative body, or judicial system. Often, they hunt down "criminals" with near impunity and perform summary judgement or capture them and take them elsewhere to be jailed or tried in a kangaroo court. Many of these manhunts are at the bequest of someone who requests it of the Service and conveniently and charitably donates to the organization's coffers. Out of a Marshal's earshot, many call them (over-glorified) bounty hunters.
