The First Pilgrims

There are infinite Realms that can be reached by the Paths - or so close to infinite that it makes no difference. On one of those worlds, where world-walking was more common than most, there arose a legend: The Shining City. It was said to be a place where all the questions of the universe could be answered. Some believed it was where God lived; others, that one could become a god by reaching it. From that world came the First Pilgrims, carrying the legend of The Shining City with them. They were determined to find it. After all, if the multiverse is infinite, then every legend must be true somewhere.

The First Pilgrims spread out across the realms, searching for clues - and spreading the tale as they went. As their story was told and retold, others took up the mantle of Pilgrim and began their own journeys in pursuit of The Shining City.

Today, no one knows for certain what became of them. Some say they are long gone - dead, most likely. Others claim they still wander the Paths, made immortal by purpose or fate, walking until the end of time.

There are those who believe they died by their own hands in a great fit of despair, after years of fruitless searching. Still others insist they found ways to endure - becoming machines, duplicating themselves, stealing bodies, or splitting across dimensions in their relentless quest.

And some believe the First Pilgrims succeeded - that they reached The Shining City, and that is why they are gone.

In the end, their fate may not matter. Their legend has traveled far beyond the world of its origin. Across the realms, Pilgrims still walk the known and unknown Paths, searching for signs, for truths, for a way to The Shining City. They follow in the footsteps of the First Pilgrims, reading their scattered words, tracing their vanished paths, and adding their own stories to the ever-growing myth.
